I run a social network devoted to political opinions contributed by our members, many of whom are cutting and pasting articles they have already posted on their own blogs. I recently found out that one of our more prolific contributors has stopped posting because he said that the duplicate content hurt his own blog's pagerank in google.

I want to be able to assuage his concerns and those of other bloggers who may be reluctant to post on We Op-Ed. Are there any ways that I can prevent this problem with duplicate content? It seems that there must be because there are many sites out there that republish articles and bloggers seem ok with posting to them.

Duplicate content does not hurt your site at all. Period. It is a myth.

Original content on a specific page will push that page higher over one with duplicate content.

The best way to convey this to someone who is optimistic is to use AP articles as an example.

Thanks for your response. I tried emailing the member who expressed his concern, but it didn't seem to allay his worries, as he is still not posting.

Thanks again!

Visit the Google webmaster blog for a discussion on this. I don't think it is safe to say that duplicate content is a myth, it really depends. They cover duplicate content issues and may have information that will help in your situation. Duplicate content can hurt your site if it is used in the wrong way.

Hello James,
You are absolutely right!
It can be used without hurting your pagerank.
I've read that in previous articles.
However, it didn't reveal the how.
Thanks for providing the link, I'm headed over to the site.
Enlightened and Grateful.

I run 10 Websites daily.. and submit my articles to other websites as well. Just to be safe, I don't duplicate my content, although I can always "re-hash" it. Try it.. you won't have to exert too much effort doing that.

My understanding is that it could hurt your pagerank if it is done incorrectly. I run a business networking site and we get syndicated articles and post them. To avoid the duplicate content penalty, we put a link back to the site we got the article from. This tells the googlebot that we are not the original source and we should be ranked appropriately for that article. Without providing that link to the original source google may consider it duplicate content and penalize you for it. You can read more on Google's webmaster blog

It depends of the page strength of the site where the original article was published. AP doesn't have much to worry in that regard. But for new sites or unknown blogs, republishing on stronger forums might well push the original site in the supplemental index if Google bots attributes the content to the new one. This is why you see some sites that have seen their contents stolen or have been copied, rank lower than the thieves' sites (especially when the use much older domain names).

To avoid this I will give enough time for a new article to be well established on my own blog before submitting to other sites. Or even if I submit I will try to make some changes in the contents.

And Pagerank is a myth, this should not be your concern. Who cares about Pagerank if you have more traffic and get higher rankings for your targeted keywords. Unless you are planning to sell links...

What a great question. Thanks

Unique content will always be prefered by Google and other major search engines. There are plenty of other things that can affect page rank. One nice helpful resource is a plagiarism site checker that I've added to many other useful links. Might come in handy to a few who worry whether their own words are being used elsewere.
