What are the best ways to create hype around a soon to be launching website?
I don't know if anyone has heard of TheLadders.com but they did a remarkable job of hyping the launch of the site. All the top bloggers were writing about them and they were on things like CNBC all before the site was even up!
How does this happen?

The key to creating hype is having a great Public Relations company on the payroll.

You can get a decent PR company for about $3k a month. They aleady have the connections in place to get your product or service written about in newspapers and magazines.

If you do not have $3k a month, then you are not ready to try and create hype. Your service or product needs to be tested inside and out by existing users. It also needs a revenue model to sustain the exponential growth that comes with the hype.

Good question and good answer.

I might add hype is a phenomena that I think will quickly become outdated. I relate to the entrepreneur who looks at all the internet tools at their disposal to start a website or business and starts dreaming an idea they think can take off without a lot of capital investment. I agree with SUP.biz.COO in that a professional grade marketing solution would be appropriate for a professional grade site app.

There's always something new and better around the corner and getting the word out fast and effectively can be key. If you BETA your site and your users are compelled to mention it in their blogs etc, even better. The latter is a strategy available to anyone without hiring a marketing firm- if your idea is good enough. Depending on your market and risk tolerance, you might think about focussing on good old fashioned word-of-mouth reputation rather than creating hype.

Best,

Anthony
