There are a few mistakes that people make when using social networking sites to try to get more exposure for their business. These mistakes can be minor and not amount to much, or they can be fatal and cause you to lose your business and never make contact with anyone.

Naked Profile.
If you try to use social networks by just signing up and sending bulletins and emails to people, you’re missing the point entirely. If you don’t have a profile that’s the first thing people notice. You’ve already ruined your credibility and made yourself look like a scammer. Anyone who doesn’t take the time to at least set up a simple bio page has nothing to present. Even if you add friends, what are they going to see? No one wants to do business with someone they don’t know. To them you’re like a stranger lurking in the shadows with no real identity. You also want to have a nice picture of yourself so they will see it when your activity comes up in the search engine of the site. If you don’t have a picture people see you as the default no pic blank photo and this makes you look like you’re not professional or trustworthy.

Your About Me Page is all about your business opportunity
This makes you look like you’re broke and you need someone to sign up for your opportunity because you need to pay your light bill. Your about page should be about you and who you really are. It’s not the place to promote or advertise. People want to know you, not what you do or how much money you make.

Too much hype
We already know that your business is the next best thing since buttered bread, but when you have too much hyped up claims about how your business is making you a millionaire in three days, we can see right through it. If you’re that rich why do you need to use social networks at all? You should be on a warm sunny beach somewhere enjoying your good fortune.

Sending ads in comments and friend emails.
Oh boy..that one is a big no no. When you use your friend’s comment box to post an ad or banner for your business, you’ve shot yourself in the foot. Do you honestly think they’ll sign up for your business just because you shove it down their throat?

Put a link or a banner on your profile just in case someone wants to know what you do, but the main thing you want to do is present YOURSELF as someone who is credible and has a handle on who you are as a person.

Social networking is all about making friends, being helpful, and being REAL.
People want to do business with people they can identify with and who they can get to know as a friend first and foremost.

If they want to know what you’re doing to make money online they will ASK YOU. Then you have the opportunity and the PERMISSION to tell them and they won’t feel like they’re being sold to.

Hi Rebecca,
Thanks for the post about Social Network Marketing mistakes. This is great information. You point out a lot of little things that we do without really thinking about what we are really trying to accomplish. I have been in networking about a year and there is a lot to learn. Some things I see are disgusting and I am sure I have probably mistakenly done some too. You have to be a fast learner on the internet to learn what people and things are about.
This is the first social networking website that I have seen that has a great introduction. There are all kinds of helpful information about how to use the site to establish yourself. You are not immediately bombarded with everyone's business opportunity. You are immediately given access to all kinds of helpful marketing information, which is just great to see.

Nice article Rebecca, one of my pet peeves you hit on the head is when people come to my page and leave a comment by posting their business Ad and somewhere hidden in that is a greeting to me.

my feelings are your comment should be about me.the fact that you have actually read my page or reviewed my blogs to see who this guy really is.

this happens on all social network member pages, posting business ads on everyone's page.My page is not the next bulletin board for your ad,that is how I feel.

talk to me and about me.if you see my email or a website to contact me and you want to share something with me,that is great.,then perhaps it's something I deem useful and if it is, I will respond.

often times your page gets so filled with everyone's Ads...you have to wonder,WHO'S PAGE IS THIS ?...because your personal postings are buried so fall down no one gets to know you anymore.

so when you visit my page...visit me...and if you are interesting enough, I will check out your page to find out who you are and what it is you do to make your life exciting and rewarding.

thanks again for the article Rebecca ,I enjoyed reading it.

Rebecca,

I just signed up here a few minutes ago & was curious about your article. It's title was one of the subjects that the CEO was requesting for reprint in the magazine and I wanted to see how someone approached the subject matter.

You used the KISS method and Kudos to you. Very to the point, and quite simple actually. I have to re-do many of my profiles because I fell into the "cookie cutter" follow-me practice of splashing my opportunity in my about me area. Ut oh!

I am learning, and you re-emphasized it, that less is more! Now I feel confident to re-attack my profiles & actually put myself into it, which is what I wanted to do but was advised not to.

I enjoyed your writing style and look forward to reading more from you.

Hi Rebecca, Thanks for these tips. I am brand new to this online networking and admit that I feel like a fish out of water. I am going to your howto tag and see if there is any info on how to set up a bio page, post a pic, etc. Maybe my granddaughter can help me..she knows all about my space and face book. Will stay in touch. Thanks.
