I came across an article on The Wall Street Journal about the increasing impact of online video ads and how they are helping small and medium sized business to gain from it. There are quite a few sites like Jivox that allows users (SMB) to create and distribute their video ads with a shoe string budget.
This is one good thing coming out from web 2.0 – everyone has access to high performing video ads and other rich media previously used exclusively by big corporate. However, do you think that online video ads will be able to replace TV commercial as the mainstay of advertising?

These online videos can be used by the SMEs in the following ways:

-INTERNAL staff communications: An easy-to-use tool for training videos, HR policies, product announcements, video message from CXO / senior management)
-EXTERNAL customer communications: An easy-to-use tool for customer installation / demo / training videos, product updates, message from the CEO, etc.)
-ADVERTISING: To cost effectively produce high-quality video advertisements either independently or using creative agency partners and distribute video ads through targeted ad distribution network with traffic reporting and analysis...

This media simply makes advertising less expensive, giving the opportunity to small businesses and for that matter people in general to have a voice - accessibility with the click of a mouse! Whether this will be the mainstay of advertising maybe a stretch. In a similar way we could say that easy access to info online would eliminate the bookstores. But this evolution is a incredible catalyst to globalization and certainly a welcome one for smaller businesses.

Thanks Nadira for your thoughts!

However, producing a video ad using a production company is a huge barrier to entry for SMBs due to high costs. In other words, as a small business you cannot buy small video ad inventory on sites like Accuweather.com or Examiner.com and many more. Those sites usually require advertisers to purchase millions of impressions not just a few thousand. And, this is where video advertising companies like jivox come in handy which remove all these barriers with its end-to-end advertising platform.

Hello Max, Nadira...

I’m a small business owner – I want to run online video ads. So, how do I know of sites that offer royalty-free images, videos and music? Would also be nice if free-ware lets me build the video ad using online tools. Any one facing similar issues? Please advise. Thanks!
BTW: Max, Is Jivox an online video advertising outsourcing site?

just google free domaign images. This should bring up some good referrences .
Their out there fer sure, but you wont need them. Just be yourself, tell your story,...
I have used videos for about 2 years now, I've directed tons of traffic, and have even been invited to give seminars for teams out there on YouTube. The Big Secret is...there is none, its just that sometimes we tend to overthink the obvious. want more info contact me, I'm glad to help out.

don't need a production company, I have about 50 videos that I get TOP GOOGLE search ratings for ANY Keyword I choose, and it cost me about $50.00 for my Microsoft web cam, and I recently spent about $350 for a Hi Def cam. Amature videos are WAY more effective than over-produced vids any day, due to the relatability factor (how many of you can relate to perfection?!? ... get my point?)

I did a video while drinking a cup of coffee, sluped it, people related to it? XD
Drove a ton of traffic to my site with it!

Video Ads and Video Blogging are becoming huge and everyone can do this with simple Video Software like Camtasia and either a webcam and recording software or inexpensive Video Camera. Being a musician I see how MTV has lost its relevance over the years, being replaced by YouTube, Google, and other online Video ressources. Any band can make a decent video or image based collage that can rival signed bands. In fact, many high priced video directors have drastically dropped their prices just so they can keep working. The Internet and technology has advanced so much in the last 5 years and given much more power to the common man/woman. Traditional media outlets like radio, TV, press won't disappear anytime soon, but they are by no means the point of reference for the age group that spends money...teens and young adults. Whatever they are into is invariably what sells and they have become so tech savvy along with being anti-establishment which will always be the case. Carry on! G

Absolutely! Adding an online video has become dirt-cheap and possibly anyone and everyone can upload videos online. Also, not only the music industry but any smaller companies who do not have large chunk for advertisement can tap this vast potential presented by the phenomenon called “online video advertising” to reach out their customer-base and to create their brand.

Cheers!

I believe that web commercials are going to be absolutely necessary for small businesses. It's such a powerful visual tool to reach out to potential customers. It's not a question of "do you want a video?" it's "what are you doing without a video?"
