I think you always must take a human approach as there is a flesh and blood person on the receiving end regardless of the forum. I would never say anything online that I would be uncomfortable saying to that person directly, including a hard sell approach to a product or service. I think the internet quite frequently lends itself to misunderstanding, as we cannot see the person or read the subtle body language that would give us more insight into the meaning behind the words.
