Although people in leadership roles are consistently called upon to be agents of change, I’ve found that those very leaders resist change just as much as the followers do! I’m sure you can guess, that poses a big problem in this world of rapid transition and constant flux. I've heard the saying “Unchanged leaders equal unchanged organizations”, how true!

Have you ever met someone who wasn’t happy unless they were going through some kind of massive change? There are a few individuals in the world who thrive on uncertainty, enjoy feeling insecure, and just love to have their routines disrupted! LOL! But I think it’s safe to say that most people resist change every now and then, especially when if affects an idea, relationship, position, or practice that is so very near and dear to them!

It’s not my goal to teach you how to bring about change or to tell you when you need to change however I’d like to share some key observations to help you understand what most people – including many leaders (and me!) – think about change.

Key observations:

1. Ever noticed that most people want to change their circumstances to improve their lives instead of changing themselves to improve their circumstances? Yes, I am certain you have! Let’s say you came to me and said “Tina, give me some ideas so I can change the people of my organization, my partner, significant other, children and so on.” Well, I’d be happy to offer advice, but not so you can change someone else. If I give you advice, I’d like you to use it to change you, because if I assist you to change you, your organization and relationships will change, too! “People do what people see” or, as my Grandma used to tell me “Monkey see, monkey do!”

2. Most people change just enough to get away from their problems, but not enough to solve them. They change just enough to escape; and as soon as they escape, they say, “Whew… Thank Goodness, I’m OK now, I don’t have to do anything else.” Unfortunately, this is like sweeping dirt under the rug, sooner or later you’ll have to clean it up and the more you sweep under it, it will only create more to clean up! Putting it off only makes it worse.

3. Most of us continue to do the same thing the same way expecting a different result. I see it all the time, people keep doing and thinking the same thing the same way, and yet they expect something different or better to happen. Yes it is the definition of insanity; “doing the same thing over and over again, expecting a different result”. When you want something you’ve never had, you have to do something you’ve never done.

4. People are willing to change, not because they see the light, but because they feel the heat! Read this carefully. You better change when you see the light because if you wait and change when you feel the heat, it’s too late. Be the leader and go first. I know, sometimes we don’t want to go first, especially when it comes to change. But we have to, that’s what it means to take control of our own life.

5. Most people are not willing to pay the immediate price of change; therefore, they don’t change and pay the ultimate price. Change is uncomfortable. It’s unsettling. Sometimes, it’s downright painful. However, in the long run, the alternative is often much, much worse.

6. Most of us see change as a hurtful thing that must be done, instead of a helpful thing that should be done. Not all change is good. Some changes are based on bad ideas. Others are self-serving and harmful to self and others. We cannot become what we want to be, by remaining what we are.

Did you see yourself in any of these observations? If so, decide NOW, this very moment, to change the way you think about change. Why is this so important? Because when change becomes success, you’ll look back at it and call it growth.

One small change made on a daily basis, yields significant growth and long-term success! Do you want better health, eat an apple a day; that’s one small change. Would you like to be happy, change your face by wearing a smile, again that’s one small change or how about thinking of something you are truly thankful for, you cannot be unhappy and grateful at the same time. It is the small and simple things of life that bring the most pleasure and it is the small and simple changes that bring huge benefits our way.

BE an agent of change and enjoy the results!
