I am new to the social networking arena, and have been putting a lot of time and energy in getting my companies name out there. I was trained in the old school of cold calling, and it has worked wonders for me thus far. Now, I hear about this new technique, and I have decided to give it a try. I have joined this group, facebook, twitter, linked in...bought face book ad space, updated our website to include social bookmarking along with making the site much more functional for online ordering. So with all this will I increase my sales?? What are your thoughts?

Alicia - cold calling is making a phone call to a potential client/customer and they don't know you from adam nor have they asked you for information. Social networking will replace the cold call. Visit my blog at www.DavidEJohnsonPE.blogspot.com - I would be glad to help you with your social networking.

Doing what you've already done, using the best practices and working it consistently should bear good results for you. From direct experience, I've seen that consistent and smart effort on the social sites absolutely increases sales over time.

Well, You certainly have provoked a ton of responses and most of them very thoughtful! Take a look at what you have done by asking one simple question. Your question was one cold call that went out to a mass audience and you have them (us) calling you back now! So, looking at your responses do you not think you have some potential prospects? You are connecting with a large audience now and if you constantly remind them of what you are selling then when they need something your name pops in their mind. Look I don't know you, never spoken with you verbally but if I was in need of your product/service I would certainly give you a chance to quote a price. You have to be focused and very organized to keep up with all the leads your getting from this one question. Your next question to all of us should be are any of you in need of my product, if so let me give you a quote. You certainly aren't going to offend anyone as most of us are selling something. In short, yes this will help your sales and who knows, you may even find a friend or two.

Just my thoughts!

Chris you have a good point. The important part to remember is that while it is a given that most folks here are promoting something, to truly use the resources of a site like this and connect with other people, building a relationship with others involves the giving of help and infromation relevant to what is being asked.

Where a lot of people fall down is trying to pitch their product in an answer to genuine request for help. Once you can establish trust and credibility by helping first, then building the relationship through mutual understanding and friendship, then you will be seen as a leader in your field. This is the key. Once you establish this, then the sky really is the limit.

I couldn't agree with you more!!! The last thing I want is a sales pitch when I am looking for help and just looking to have a good thought provoking conversation. Yesterday was my first day here and I wake up to find two posts on my wall about go into business with me and I don't have a clue as to who they are. That is the kind of stuff that is unproductive and isn't helpful at all!
