Good question Diane. I have seen a lot of different ways that people use. Some are okay and others I feel a little deceitful......guess it is in how you view it. Personally I have used leads which I have purchased but find this not to work. By far social networking and REALLY caring about people is tops on my list. So, caring, sharing and being truly sincere is #1.
I don't really have to bother about referrals or networking, I buy my customers and its working out well and saves a lot of time check out my video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hd3vbWRhMbM
Are you truly asking how to get new customers to buy the PRODUCT of your business or are you referring to get new business builders for your opportunity?
I find that most newbies aren't even trying to attract customers but are only looking for business builders. This is a huge part of the failure rate in our industry. In fact many people when choosing a biz opp totally disregard the product line as unimportant. Without a viable product being sold to customers, the business will fall apart.
If you are referring to business builders then this is the point I am trying to make. That few entrepreneurs are making the distinction between the two. There is a HUGE distinction. Customers create stability in your business while you are searching for the few business builders that are SERIOUS about building a business and creating wealth.

Since I have a physical product to sell, I provide a lot of samples to "visitors" in my brick & mortar and donate product to a lot of charities for their fund raisers. This gets my name out and gets people to try my product, plus it usually helps a good cause. I've also offered up my space as a free meeting area for small groups that just want a quiet place to get together.
In addition, I try to build relationships with existing customers and fellow business people in order to get a little bit of the referral market.
Great question! Obviously, if you can't get the word out about your business, you can't be in business.
I use a variety of methods: in-person networking, virtual networking, article writing, community building, referrals, and others. These all come together to create a "product funnel" to attract people that are already interested in what you have to offer, so you can spend more time talking to leads that have a much higher chance of becoming customers than chasing loosing leads.
