1) Buy the T-shirt or Tote Bag and Wear it Often

Whether you are at the mall or running errands, this shirt will get people to ask you about your business. If you are able to pitch people on your business who are actively coming to you 100 times a month for 100 dollars, then you are going to make some serious money. Not only will you convert 5-10% of everyone that asks, you will also become an expert on your pitch by giving it 100+ times a month to strangers. The T-shirt was specifically designed for our members to leverage the Sta.rtUp.biz name. The logo underneath the slogan will spark interest and confidence. This makes for an easy transition into your sales pitch.

You can see the T-shirts here.

2) Carry a Sign-Up List with You

This does many things. It establishes trust, gives them a reason to listen to your pitch, allows you to build a valuable list of prospects, and identifies their level of interest. When someone asks about the $100, you tell them that you have list with you of each person that has asked. You quickly explain that once you tell them about your business, then they will sign the list with their name, phone number, and email address. If they are the 100th person, then they get $100 on the spot. I would also encourage you to offer a once a month $100 raffle from everyone who signs up. Let them know they will be notified by email if they win. This will encourage them to give you a working email address. Finally, make one extra column on your sheet that asks what their interest level is in your business on a 1-10 scale. This will help you weed out people that have zero interest.

3) Have a Camera with You and a Crisp $100 Bill

Some people may think they can wear the T-shirt, get the contacts, and never have to give away the $100. At the end of the day, you are only hurting yourself by not doing this. You want to give away the $100. This allows you to take pictures of the person holding up the $100 bill and use it as a marketing tool when someone asks you. Also, you can send out a picture to your email list of prospects each time you get another winner along with a link to your business.

Well I already wear a T-shirt to advertise my business and get plenty of customers, marketing your business by how you dress is great, then I also hand out leaflets with my latest offers.

I prefer vehicle advertisement, mainly because I rarely wear T-shirts, but it's the same kind of thing. I don't use leaflets though, having reduced my 'pitch' to "Be informed. It's free." which fits nicely on my cards.

I will set an appointment with a person I just met, but I don't as a rule tell them anything on the spot...too much chance for misunderstanding, and honestly, I am usually too busy :)

What do you think about handing out post cards. I know you run the risk of it being tossed in the trash. But if you do a mass production. What do you think the numbers would be for success?

In my experience, hand outs are time consuming and pushy. You are better off buying door hangers and targeting apartment complexes.

It all comes down to your offer and your message on the notecard or leaflet. You should always test different slogans and keep track of the response rate for each one.

Quite an interesting idea. I looked at the shirts and can see a quality product there with your name on it.

Associating with Sta.rtUp.Biz is a useful modern marketing strategy. For those of you who have a diversified business line, what your business is may depend on the client's market category and profile.

If you have learned anything about relationship first networking, you should see the value in making a friendly contact when someone asks you about your business like this. You can use social networking as a form of research into what people want and even take some time planning out how to approach them. So it's useful to have something to offer they can enjoy independant from your business. SUp is an environment you can refer people to and support with your online social presence here. This is particularly a good idea for those of you without websites or social networks of your own.

Suggesting a startup oriented community may not be all that attractive to people not interested in business. What you can do is associate yourself as a "startup", so right there you have some legitimacy to talk about your business, being an entrepreneur, and online social networking in general. I might advise you to learn of the interests anyone may have and help them to network into their areas of interest through some social networks that are being put together on Ning. I promote this as a modern marketing stragey on my social network.

Purchasing the shirts, conducting the promotion, and paying out the contest is a business expense that should be weighed carefully. Compare this to what it costs to get your business message out to 100 people. You can run this promotion for what appears to be less than $140 dollars. I think the return on investment can be there if you manage to turn those inquiries into sales. So you may be able to optimize your turnover by connecting people with what they want - even if you are not the one who offers it. Likewise, it seems useful to recommend people to a shared network and promotion. You might find yourself getting leads through new members joining as a result of the link on the shirts; a nice value that comes with being a member on the site.

Let's say you win the $1000 prize by commenting on this blog. Right there you get to make a business decision. If I were to win, I might hire a couple college students to go around wearing the gear until they pay out. I estimate you could do this for $500 including the cost of materials, time, and prize money. I would then offer each person who asked a nice drink (no more than $200 total) and a card or two for my social network Area Light (card stock and printing for less than $100). I would also ask them for their e-mail, ask about their familiarity and interests in online social networking, and ask them about their business if they have one.

I'm setting up Area Light to compliment Sta.rtUp.Biz. So from there, I have the market categories of personal, professional, organizational, and geographic to relate to virtually anyone. Within that, I can market my social network as an enterprise, opensource learning environment, and modern media outlet in service of casual internet explorers. I can also benefit from using the site as any member could to promote my personal lines of business that are Nascent Dynamics ( ). If they are more contemporary business people, then I might refer them over to SUp and make myself available to them here.

If you win the prize, you might consider the same kind of promotion model. You can refer people to my site and benefit as I described above- for free. I could develop a corresponding promotion through Area Light Member Services and Nascent Dynamics ( ) to work with you to make the most of your investment. We could negotiate a flat fee from your marketing budget to provide social networking services in support of your business, and perhaps a variable % of profits made on the basis of my consulting solutions.

If there are some of you who like the idea of supporting SUp's promotion concept, then you may be interested in networking with me here and dicussing a project I refer to as The Company. Please feel free to contact me through my activities here such as my profile, blogs, Modern Business Exploration group, or Ning Network Creators group.

As it stands alone, I think this concept by Sta.rtUp.Biz is fairly innovative and I glad to discuss what I think makes it particularly sharp.

Best,

This really works. I bought T-Shirts with my company name on it and was always getting stopped and asked questions about the business. And now to see it with Sta.rtup Biz that would help even more.

I love that idea thanks

The person wearing could keep a tally with them to show their prospects what number they were after the discussion, as a measure of "ethos" assuring them you are honest!

I'm about to start a project with t-shirts mugs and hats, designing and selling them for free on the web and showing others how they can do the same.
