I got this e mail today...probably shouldn't have even opened it, but my curiosity got the best of me. so here is what it said: (I removed the hyperlinks because there was no way I would be advertising for them.)

I know it was my fault I opened it, but I had to show how ridiculous this e mail marketing ad appeared to me. Obviously they didn't know a thing about me, but somehow I got on their opt in list. Someone paid big money for the demographic information...online habits, not necessarily name and private information.
Why would anyone spend time sending this and risk getting blackballed for spam! I immediately opted out of this marketing company just for being stupid. No offense intended.

How successful is your e mail marking campaign?

We only use e mail for clients and customers, and of course social contacts. From what I have learned from many associates that type of e mail infuriates rather than attracts.

Hi Rob,

You are so right! Not only do I not open emails from strangers, if anyone of my 'new friends' on a social networks sends me any spam (this includes jokes and chain letters), I no longer open any emails from them, and they are usually removed from my list.

I don't try to "sell" anything via email...but even maintaining your customers or team via email can be risky if you take the blanket approach. I got an email from my enroller after months of silence that read:

I will be gone on a family outing tomorrow for the majority of the day.

If you need me in regards to an enrollment, feel free to call my cell at

XXX XXX XXXX. Otherwise, email me or call me on Thursday.

Have a beautiful day and enjoy every moment!

I have been enrolling my customers on my own for over a year, and helping others do the same. Even though she had recently gotten back in touch with me, after a long silence, with a few friendly text messages, this type of message, obviously sent out to her whole team, irked me. Why, exactly, should I email or call her?

Now, the company and team I work with are wonderful, and I do not need my enrollers support to succeed, because I now work with another mentor on our team and SHE is the one who is financially rewarded for helping me grow my business (although my enroller still does earn a percentage on my customers' purchases).

My point is, when I responded to her text message the other day with some friendly chit-chat, she must have put me on an email list and started to send me emails that were not targeted at me, but rather her new customers.

Rather annoying, don't you think?

One word of caution - if you get this type of email from a stranger, DO NOT OPT OUT, simply block them...Spammers often use the OPT OUT button to see if an email address is current, and if the initial email is responded to, even with a click on the opt out, they will sell the address to a hundred other spammers and your inbox will be FLOODED.

Thanks Rob,
Laila

Hello Rob, You're right and I do the same thing! I don't open emails unless I know who sent them. I don't think email advertising the the way to promote an online business. Driving people to your website is the most important way to create business. To me, unwanted emails, no matter how riduculous they might read, is like the obnoxious retail salesperson who just hovers over and hounds you while you're trying to shop and compare products at a store. Trying to find the best way to drive people to your webiste is the Holy Grail of Internet marketing and when someone comes up with that secret then they will make a fortune!
