For the Gods of Google to accept your site, you must do more than offer up a golden cow. Here are the Ten Commandments to follow. Sinners will face purgatory with a penalty or be sent to hell with a lifetime ban.

The First Commandment - Thou Shalt Have Fresh Content

The easiest way to accomplish this is with a daily blog. One to three paragraphs of original content related to your site.

The Second Commandment - Thou Shalt Do Keyword Research

For each of your daily blogs, go to the Free Keyword Researcher on our Free Biz Tools page and identify a keyword string of 2-4 words long to title your blog.

Use the Keyword string in your blog content 1-3 times.

The Third Commandment - Thou Shalt Submit Daily Blog to Social Bookmarks

The exact keyword string that you identify for you blog's title will be used in each submission. Change up the description for each submission.

Here are the angels of Google that will help you ascend in the rankings and find a home in Google Heaven:

The Fourth Commandment - Thou Shalt Use the Site Name in the Title

The Google Gods want you to be true to yourself and not try to trick your fellow man.

The best way to accomplish this is to use it in the second half of the title. Ex: The Ten Commandments of Search : Sta.rtUp.biz

The Fifth Commandment - Though Shalt Have Links from Directories

Identify the keyword string that you want your index page to rank for and use it in the title of your submissions. Also, only do a couple of submissions each day.

Here is a list of PR4+ directories that have free submission. The $299 Yahoo directory submission is also a good move.

The Tenth Commandment - Thou Shalt Not Forget about Google Images

Google images accounts for a large amount of traffic and should not be ignored. On each daily blog, you should have an image that is clickable. Remember that Google images shows a bunch of thumbnails and not your blog content. Then use the keyword string to name the image, alt tag, and caption.

Although I may not be Moses, this list just may save the soul of your website.

Hi - This is a great list but I was wondering about the second commandment and keywords. If you only use the keyword 1-3 times, how can the search engine determine the actual keyword in your content.

They no longer use the keyword meta tag, you can use the keyword in the title, however there are time when my keyword may get used 3 times but another word 10 times. I seem to often rank better for none keyword searches (like the word used 10 times) than for the actual keywords - can be frustrating when you want to attract visitors based on the keyword - non keyword visitors don't convert.

It is a very frustrating aspect of search results at present.

Les,

Google may not use the keywords meta tag, but a lot of the other search engines do. Yahoo does as well.

This is an exceptionally great way to get the principles into people with very thick skulls, like me! I love it. It would need a little nuancing for a non-Christian audience, don't you think? I am going to Digg it anyway ...

First thought that comes to my mind is "look at all I've been missing out on!" Great advice.

Hello, WOW! You really got my head spinning after I've read your "TEN COMMANDMENTS" . I'm kind of new to SEO so I will be taking your advice and just see what happens. I am currently building my website, it's called ezejump and you can be sure that I will be taking a serious look at your recommendations. I've heard that it's a hard and competitive business to get good rankings on Google so I will be thaking a GOOD LOOK at your advice. Thanks so very much. George from SUNNY PUERTO RICO

This is great! I am wondering though, how often we should submit to these sites? Are there some links that are with more frequency than others? Like the rss feeds I assume we submit once.

I disagree with a number of your commandments, especially #3.

#2 Keyword research is crucial and cannot be done with just one keyword suggestion tool like WordTracker (which has a definite British bias). You must check your keywords in the search engines themselves in order to make sure that you are targeting the right ones.

#3 Just because a website has a high PR rank does not mean that it is useful to use for SEO. Social Media Optimization is a new sub-field of SEO, and must be done carefully, with a lot of thought behind it. Some of the problems with your list include: Mixx, Reddit, Newsvine, Wikio, and PanamaNews are strictly for real news and events (unless you are posting news items on your site or blog, I would not use these, nor do I recommend Digg); Clipfire is only for shopping; PixelGroovey is only for tutorials; ShoutWire is for online vides; Slashdot is news for nerds; Sphinn is ONLY for SEO-related stories; TheoryofFun seems to have mutated into something completely different, and Bringr and ClipClip are down.

Google is NOT the only search engine. You seem to have forgotten this.

#6 Comments on blogs should only be done if you read the posts and say something intelligent about it. Posts that say, "I really like your blog. Check out my (selling product site)" will get deleted as SPLOG (spam on a blog).

#8 I really would not use free classified ads unless you are selling something or advertising a business opportunity. Having inbound links from these sorts of sites will hurt you in Google and other search engines.
