Most people start out with a great idea, then realize they do not have the capital to see it through. Capital is more than money.

What attracts money is people capital...relationships.

People are always watching you. There are people all around you with resources that you could never imagine. They have experience, money, and connections on and beyond what you need. It really doesn't matter where you live.

Obviously, living in a major city makes this easier but only if you are a socialable outgoing person. But that doesn' matter either. Ever heard the expression six degrees of separation? Everyone's connected.

Once you have your product idea, business plan, and mindset to make it happen, GET TALKING. Tell your parents, siblings, friends, cousins, grandparents, aunts, uncles, grocer, pastor, neighbor and anyone else in your path what you're doing and WHAT YOU NEED to make it happen. Keep doing it until the responses start pouring in. They will.

Someone will remember their friend's neighbor's cousin is in the business or something like that. The key is to not judge the messenger. Just write down the lead and follow up no matter what. Talk to whomever will talk about what you need with you. They and you will both know if that person is qualified to help you get to the next level.

They will likely know somone who can help you. These are all your cheerleaders. Be nice to all of them. Be grateful. Send thank you cards and updates as you progress.

Do you belong to a church or other organization where you volunteer your time on a regular basis? Have you ever worked for or with someone who knows your work ethics and believes in you? Start with people you know and who know you and your work.

How long should the elevator pitch be?

I think you need to get your point across in 30 seconds or less. You have to assume the prospect will get off at the next floor. That's one good reason to have a business card, formal presentation, and have done your homework on the prospect. From there, be exceptional in discussion and take advantage of every opportunity to close. So not a bad idea to have a plan for every floor! I think this is why "elevator pitch" is such a good analogy. Just like first impressions, most business decisions are made within walking distance between offices.
