Some Private Investigator tips of the Trade


1. Physical fitness is a must. The Best have physical and mental toughness. The best are physically and mentally tough.
2. There's a time to through in the towel when it comes to business, but never a time to give up, when it comes to life.
3. If you exit the vehicle ensure you have your identification, on your body.
4. If you exit the vehicle have at least, a cell phone on you just in case you need to call for help.
5. There a time to move, a time to sit still and a time to be aggressive. Know your case complete your objective and return home safe.
6. Assume all files you receive are compromised, until otherwise proven not to be.
7. Do not put an Office manger in charge of investigators, without them having at least some experience to what the investigator is going threw.
8. If you are management do not have debates of the company in front your investigators take those to a private location.
9. Do not assume your investigators or stupid, assume that they are truth verifiers and you're under the microscope as a fellow investigator, Owner or manager.
10. Pay your Investigators on time. And Fucking pay them there worth.
11. Encourage positive reinforcement and Leadership in the rank of your investigators and company, it will provide for a better base foundation.
12. Treat your investigators better that your clients, there the ones who are going to make you look good in front of your clients.
13. Never, Never, Criticize a good investigator if he returns with a lease that favorable result on a case. Have anther Good investigator follow up…Remember even your best are entitled to have bad days.
14. Investigator are people too they make mistakes, Even your best investigators are entitled to a bad day, There not as good as their last case there as good as their word and how much heart they have.
15. Treat all aggression with niceness, in order to de-escalate the scenario. Remember safety first.
16. Never assume what your Subject is going to do next what the subject is doing in why. It's okay to analyze in order to predict the subject subjects next move, in order to make yours.
17. When in doubt shoot video. You can always subtract you can never go back and add.
18. Always try to have a visual aid while pretexing, it provides for a believable entrance.

37. Get everything in writing. / It means nothing in writing, it's worthless verbally stated. Most People have no honor, there word means nothing. If a man/woman is as good as his/her word. Get the picture, get it in writing.
38. Always keep your own personal records own everything, especially of cases you have conducted.
39. SHRED EVETHING YOU THROW OUT PERTAING TO A CASE. ALLONG WITH PERSONAL RECORDS FOR YOUSELF AND FAMILY.
40. Have you cases sent via e-mail; this is to ensure that your case originated form a bonded and licensed company. CYA
41. Sometimes its best to let the subject go, there will always be another day. Don't just think about the pay.
42. Turn you phone off if you are alone and in mobile surveillance. It will distract you during a crucial time. Remember 360 degrees at all time during mobile vehicle surveillance. What you don't see can hit you.
43. When your phone dose ring makes sure you pay special attention to what's going on around you.
44. Sometimes it's not what to say in a situation, it's what not to say. Therefore sometimes, "saying nothing" is the best thing. Best used when dealing with law enforcement/spouses, Smart ass civilians, Mothers and Mother in Laws.
45. When dealing with Local Law Enforcement Be silent, divulge nothing show your requested identification. Remember Silence is Professional.
46. If you get a speeding ticket while on the job, call a lawyer.
47. Remember anything is possible if you ever doubt yourself, or the advice of another investigator. Where there is a will their is a way.
48. Try not to answer you cell phone in public. If you have to sit down or stop observe the area around you while you speak on the phone. Better yet call the individual back later, especially if you are on a case.
49. If an Agency dose not secure documents and personnel files properly. Retain yours on you. One good way of testing the Agency security is too acquire your own file. Remember Security is a continuing action.

52. Never turn you back on an aggressive subject, walk away until you have reached a safe distance. If the subject peruses you, stand your ground and defend yourself. If you are in a public are request assistance and local law enforcement.

54. Never assume you not, under counter surveillance, in this job field someone is always watching.
55. If you detect counter surveillance, allow them to conduct their activates and make note of their mistake. Depending on their capability and limitations it is essential to, make note of any new friends after you have made detection. Your biggest threat is not paranoia; however, is whether there is a danger to you life or not. Investigator safety is essential at all times. In most cases it will be other lawyer's trying to get dirt on you in order to discredit your investigation especially when dealing with Insurance, and Domestic files if there investigation is being geared for litigation.
56. Never use the same pretext twice in the same city. Unless it is the witness to accident. Or looking for a friend.
57. Avoid using the same set up all the time, you should make an effort to find multiple set ups.
58. Ensure that your video tapes are properly marked after you take them out of the camera, this will help ion the event that you don't accidentally record over a tape that you used for a previous file.
59. Research your case, where your case is coming from and where it is going.

It dose not hurt to run a quick background on the individual assigning the case.

60. When at the front door don t crowd the door back of and give good distance.
61. Always give documents a personal code, it will make it difficult for prying individuals to locate, Hence giving you the advantage.
62. Study a different language of your choice as much as possible you never know when this might come in handy.
63. Always get a Retainer prior to working.
64. When conducting private security work, log as much as possible. And practice describing people, and what their wearing, it might come in handy later.
