I just joined Twitter today and am filling in my settings. There is a check box for
Protect my Updates
Only let people whom I approve follow my updates. If this is checked, you WILL NOT be on the public timeline. Updates posted previously may still be publicly visible in some places.
So I have a couple of questions, keeping in mind that I am looking at Twitter as a marketing tool.

1) Should I check this box? will I be SPAM'ed to death if I don't?

2) What is a timeline? since I didn't have it checked yet, do I have a timeline? how can I see it? Do you have one?

Hi Laila,
No I don't think you should protect your updates. Why? then your tweets will not be indexed in the search engines. I am looking into ways to avoid spam and will let you know. I have lots of Twitter ebooks to read and Ill let you know. My position is that you are choosey about who you follow. You can let people follow you but you don't have to follow back. If the profile looks like spam material I would not follow or you will be spammed to death. I think you can get followers by following Tony Robbins and Randy Gage or other reputable business people like Marketing Coaches, trainers and the such. I feel it is chancy following people who are just posting ads about their opportunities. Those are the type that are going to send you spam direct messages. You just have to use your judgment to decide who to follow and who not to follow. If you choose not to follow certain people yet they are following you, they get your updates, but you can't direct message them nor can they direct message you. If you don't follow the spammers you don't get spammed to death. I don't think its a good idea to block spammers on Twitter because I think its profitable to allow them to follow you without reciprocating the follow and have them see your updates. that is my perspective presently but might change.

Michael

Hi Laila,
public timeline is just a fancy way of saying your profile can be viewed
by public. This by the way allows search engines to index your profile.
There is a Twitter timeline page, Sorry I dont have the address handy at
the moment but lists most recent Twitter tweets. I would not worry
about the timeline issue. I would use the other methods I posted in other
posts of how to get followers and keep it targeted. Use your judgment in
who to follow and who not to follow. Keep your profile public to allow
search engine bots to index your posts.

Best Regards
Michael

Hi Laila,

As a Marketer you want your Tweets to be seen by the most people possible. So shutting some out is counter-productive.

Yes You have a Timeline! It's your Profile, the link next to home on the Twitter page. This is what anyone sees when they click on your Twitter ID. Looking at other people's profiles is good practice for Screening Followers/Following. If there is nothing tweeted but self-promotion or things you're not interested in, why follow.
