Thought I'd kick off this growing Great Brits group with a little discussion on my industry - advertising - and ask whether anyone else here does their own online advertising or are a member of an ad agency etc.

I don't expect all discussions to be about business. Happy to yap about football or other things like video games, but in this thread I thought I'd start the ball rolling and see what people think is the best routes and pitfalls of online advertising.

I've done it for ten years, but I'd never profess to be a know-it-all, it changes and splits so many times there's always something knew to learn. I end up more with a library of knowledge and really like hearing others ideas and learn from peers.

So - do you do online advertising?

I think it depends how you define it? Are you talking about Pay-Per-Click in which case I have tried it but found it yielded less results than Social Media marketing, which is time consuming but more wallet friendly.

Hi Rachel, et al.

Online advertising has changed so much in the last ten years with so many specialisms and new solutions or ad material available to one.

I meant I guess the following:

Natural SEO (search engine optimisation), Pay Per Click Search, Opt-in Email, Display (Banners, Buttons, Dynamic ads - expandable, multi-format), online-PR, affiliate, classified, listing, linking, content swapping, sponsorship, social media (apps, widgets, communities, micro-blogging and social-bookmarking), mobile, viral or WOM, and even analytics and creative. And, not forgetting
of course Video and Podcasting.

And these are only some of of the top levels which are deeper when you get in to them.

I try and keep a handle on all these, but always trying to learn of a great new site or solution and also happy to help others - so if there is one area you'd like me more to expand on then just ask. By all means anyone else chip in. I'm not a guru :-) I do try and keep explanations simple and am not a techie

Cheers, Jon
