I work and socialize with many authors, and almost every single one is leaning towards the opinion that the traditional publishing route is on its way out.

Whether because of the demise of the large publishing houses, or the proliferation of online printing/PoD services, or because of the notorious pickiness of agents and publishers (especially in these financially difficult times), many believe that writers will simply get fed up of waiting and go and publish their books themselves.

What do you think?

To your ongoing success,

Andrea,

I agree. There is a hugely successful local example here in Nova Scotia.
"The Seven Virtues of the Philosopher Queen", by Barb Stegemann was a self published success within weeks. Barb invested $10K in doing this and is seeing amazing success as a result of this book. It is expanding her into TV and Movie offers and countless speaking engagements.
If you believe in yourself, go for it.

I truly believe the answer can only be yes. As the path into print becomes easier to tread due to advanced technology, familiarity with that technology is expanding the number of independent publishers. Those of us who have entered this field aren't snobbish, elitist, or unapproachable. We do not require that you be represented by a literary agent. We realize that writers or aspiring writers who do not have the time or desire to obtain the necessary technological savvy required need someone who has it. There was a time when getting into print was a matter of keeping your hope alive while battling the discouragement produced by those disheartening rejection letters. Independent publishers understand that this is a business and that the customer is king. The only question remaining is really: How much do you (the writer) believe in yourself? If the gift is in you, the rest is within reach. Wishing you success!

Andrea, your last line is right on. 'Writer are fed up with waiting'. In Japan the wife of famous actor Tatsuya Nakadai wrote a auto-biography about life with her husband. She gave it to the top publisher in Japan, Kodanshaw. They held if for seven years. When she suddenly died young, they published her book that very week.
