Hello Everyone!
My intent of joining the Funding Network is not to sell, solicit, or recruit, nor do I want to be approached by others in this fashion. I am here to share the effect of the shaking economy on my extended family, and some ways we found solutions.
My name is Tamatha Burrus. I am happily married and the mother of 5 beautiful children, 3 wonderful step children, who have given us 12 adorable grand children, so far! From day one I have been actively involved in my children and grand children's schooling and extracurricular activities. My close involvement with the childrens schools is what lead me to be working with 3 Non Profit 501(c)(3) Organizations.
Schools have been suffering for years, which really astonishes and infuriates me! These are our Leaders of tomorrow. literally, that we are schooling and raising, and yet the government has kept cutting the school's funds! In the recent past the government cut school funding up to 30%, and in direct corulation to this cut it hit the extracurricular department the hardest! Did you know statistics have shown that by parents being involved with their childrens schools and supporting their childrens extracurricular activities the rate of teen pregnancy goes down, it keeps kids off the streets, in school, away from drugs and out of gangs! Yet, the government cuts the school funding, and is getting ready to cut the funding, yet again!
Schools try to compensate for these cuts by hosting fundraisers. But how many candy bar, cookie, pizza, candles, car washes, bake sales, BBQ's, ext. can a school hold? As I stated above, I have 5 children and 12 grandchildren, ranging in ages from 15 to 5, who all live in surrounding communities, and that means I have a minumum of 8 schools that I have contact with on a daily basis! This amounts to some sort of 'fundraising' happening on a daily basis! Our 3 oldest children, who are now parents, and ourselves never had a day that we were not 'donating to or selling' something, for at least 1 of our children/grand children, unreal! I began to believe that my friends ran when they saw us coming because they knew I was going to 'mention' the current fundraiser that one of the 'kids' where involved in, and try to get them to 'donate/purchase' toward said fundraiser!
Because of my extended involvement with my children and grandchildren's schools, parents and students approached me about building 'clubs' to help rally the support of the local communtiy and businesses. I knew nothing about building 'booster clubs' so I went in search of help. It was sear luck, fate, whatever you wish to call it, that I found NABCA and ultimately the other 2 Non Profits I work with!
Let me try to make a long story short. With the help of other parents, faculty, coaches, grand parents, the communtiy, businesses, and corporations, we built not one club, but up to 10 different clubs in each one of my 'kids' schools! As word of our success spread in surrounding communities I was approached and started sharing, showing, and guiding other school with all I had learned. I eventually went from full time employment outside of the home, to part time, and then finally I started helping full time with one of the Non Profits, helping to build booster clubs all over North America!
As I stated above, here I am 3 years later and I am now involved with 3 Non Profits, that help anyone, anywhere raise funding their group or organization so desperately needs!
Helping others was always a priority for my family, and it has now become a passion for me! There is no greater joy or feeling than being able to help anyone, anywhere in the world, be able to raise the funds they need! Am I getting rich doing it...NO! That is not the point of helping others! What I get from helping others reach their goals is the feeling of happiness, peace. and contentment, that cannot be compared. Reaching out and helping each others is what we were put on this earth to do and now I know I am doing what I was meant to do!
I Wish Peace, Love & Prosperity to Each and Everyone of You in '2009' and Beyond!
Sincerely,
Tamatha Burrus
