Those are my two current book covers. Their descriptions are on my website, but they are not what this is about.

One of my two goals that I have had for some time, and I share it only to illustrate a point, not to appear saintly by any means, is to start a shelter for women.

Being able to do that of course was contingent upon my success as an author.

The other day I saw a blog elsewhere by a friend that stated they were not going to reinvent the wheel with one of their projects but instead add on to an existing wheel and modify/upgrade.

That is where my title comes in. An expression from my pre-author, work days, came to me.

I am not quickly succeeding with this goal so why not try it a different way - a paradigm shift.

That blog got me thinking. Instead of delaying results until some unknown future date, why not revise my plan so that it can become current and relevant quicker.

So i came up with the fact that I am willing to donate a meaningful portion of the net proceeds from my books to programs working with domestic violence issues.

Then of course the question arises as to how do I do that? I am not a marketer. I don't know about these things.

Any suggestions?

Peace & love,
John

I have an idea for you, my dear poet and wonderful friend. I had a shelter I was working with that wanted to raise some funds and I worked with them on a calendar to sell for a fund raiser. Would it be possible to have you write 12 short pieces which could go into a calendar and highlight the joy of moving beyond the pain? If you could do that I could help with the project graphics and maybe it could grow from there. I have read your work and it is so in tune with the heart. You are truly a gift.

Linda Marie, I understand what you are saying
but I need examples or themes to start me off.
I need a grasp of realism to put me into my world.
And what is your definition of "short pieces?"
A word or approximate line count.
I would love to help but just need that bit of guidance.
Or with it being this late in the year, perhaps greeting cards?
Or... You lead the dance and I shall follow...
And thank you for the kind words!
Peace & Love,
John

Welcome to The Funding Network, John!

That was an excellent insight: Holding off contributing until we can do something big prevents us from doing something worthwhile right now. There's an old saying: "Who gives quickly, gives twice."

You asked for suggestions,..

Look for a shelter in your own community. Call and ask what they need. (Be prepared to have to participate at a discreet distance, as shelter staff are understandably protective of their clients, and may be reluctant for a man to be highly visible on site.)

I know that women seeking shelter often leave abusive homes in a moment of desperation, carrying little more than what's in their handbag and their child's teddy bear. I remember hearing of a group that came up with a great morale booster. They put together and donated packages that contained basics like a warm blanket, a toothbrush and toothpaste, a comb and hair brush, and ... well, I'm lousy at making lists. Ask a woman friend to tell you what she'd need but might forget to take slong if she abandoned her home suddenly!

Consider the possibility that you could multiply your contributions many times over by including an existing shelter in a multi-level marketing program, as I describe in the discussion I started here on The Funding Network: A Bake Sale, in Overdrive? Going back to your image of re-inventing the wheel: you wouldn't be inventing anything, just duplicating a small wheel that can grow into a much bigger one.

(Huh. I just noticed a similarity I hadn't seen before: MLM enthusiasts seem to shate the same kind of high energy that I've seen in supporters of nonprofits they really love!)

About marketing: it ain't me either, babe, not by natural inclination anyway. :-) ...but I'm learning, I'm learning. If you haven't seen the short video that Linda Marie posted with the heading THIS IS GREAT, do! It captures the essence of using social networking as a source of contacts that become a natural, expanding -- and willing market.

...And stay actively involved in The Funding Network. I can see the synergy starting to bubble since Linda Marie started the group just a few days ago. I've heard some really exciting vibes in my own MLM company. Mike Whittingham, my friend, ShopToEarn colleague -- and fellow member of The Funding Network -- tells me that some of the real rainmakers in our company are working on creating a turnkey package of information and other resources for affiliates who want to combine for-profit marketing with nonprofit support, to the benefit of all.

Shine a light in the night!
Brian
