AMERICAN SPORTS UNIVERSITY TO LAUNCH THE
INTERNATIONAL SPORTS AVENUE OF STARS
Event to bring some of the world’s most venerable athletes and sports figures to downtown San Bernardino; Accepting nominations now

SAN BERNARDINO, CA, April 7 – American Sports University (ASU) will officially launch the International Sports Avenue of Stars (ISAS) next month. The University will be hosting a press conference on May 9, 2009 at the Historic Fox Theatre in downtown San Bernardino. The actual Inaugural Induction Ceremony and charity golf tournament will take place later in October.

The ISAS will recognize a life-long contribution of both public and peer appreciation, a tribute recognizing the individuals who have excelled within the sports industry. Inductees will be honored with a star, which will be embedded into the City’s sidewalks. Beginning in front of ASU, the sports tribute will continue to expand throughout downtown San Bernardino each year as more individuals are honored annually.

"I am excited by the project proposed by the American Sports University," said Mayor Patrick Morris of San Bernardino. “The idea of celebrating and honoring individuals that have left a lasting impact on the sports industry would be of significant benefit for both American Sports University and our City. We look forward to working with ASU on this opportunity."

“This project will generate a new sense of civic and cultural pride as well as promote this city as an international destination for tourism and sports excellence. The creation of the ISAS will play a vital role in the continued planning and development of the downtown area,” said Vice Chair Josie Gonzales, Fifth District Supervisor. “As people travel here from all over the state, country and world, they will have the opportunity to visit the International Sports Avenue of Stars.”

Unlike other monuments, the ISAS is not limited to one country or one field. Instead, the ISAS will include any individual who has had a broad impact on the world of sports, American or otherwise. Thus, coaches, broadcasters, and other sports groups are eligible for nomination. For each Inductee memorialized in the ISAS, a student scholarship will be awarded in his or her name.

While the International Sports Avenue of Stars is primarily intended to celebrate the achievements of Inductees and promote education, ASU will also use sponsorship money and funds raised to construct a new Special Olympics training facility. “It is our duty to support the needs of all athletes,” said Dr. Harry Hwang, Founder of the University.

The ISAS Committee is currently accepting nominations from the public. The submission deadline is June 1, 2009. Currently, some potential names for induction include Magic Johnson, Oscar de la Hoya, Tiger Woods, Joe Montana, Wayne Gretzky, Billie Jean King, Muhammad Ali, Yao Ming, Babe Ruth, and many others.

American Sports University is the only four-year university in the nation dedicated to preparing those students who are interested in the sports industry. A 501(c)(3) non-profit institution, ASU is committed to providing a healthy educational and athletic environment for students while playing an active role in the revitalization and development of San Bernardino.
