Sorry folks, I dropped out for a while for a few reasons: concentration on effective opportunity searching, clearing out spam, some of which was coming from this site (8-10 self-promo emails a day from the same source quickly became old,) and working at re-working what wasn't working. Make sense? It apparently does to one Startup biz member who wrote comment about exactly that and which caught my eye.
I'm writing in case another member may find this useful. In a nutshell ( a big nut!) I built a small business for 25 years, lost it to an overwhelming number of client bankruptcies (22!), client closings/takeovers (20!) and the corresponding quality of life issues that dictated change. That change came about by allowing myself to be lured to the greener pastures of Texas for a VP Marketing title. They were cactus. We lost everything - house, boat, airplane, savings, retirement, credit and ~ 2/3 of personal belongings before the mortgage fiasco became a popular news item, not that it would have made a difference. Let me add that the emotional list of shock, grief, denial, anger and acceptance is not linear and ending. At least not for me - its a bubbling emotional self-destructive soup in a pressure cooker that, I think, I have found a way to reduce to a simmer, and then a nutritious family meal.
Starting over at age 62 with children ages 12, 14 and 16 whose future and college goals have been stolen and destroyed by a combination of events (unavoidable - I deal with that) and unscrupulous people - I don't deal with that too well - is not easy. I (finally) discovered that my most immediately salable asset isn't my photography, graphic design or even account management skills in this economy, it's my experience.

As I did over 30 years ago during a major career change, I didn't just take the bull by the horns, but lifted it's tail and gave a swift kick to get things moving. I approached a community college with creative services career course options and marketing ideas that were beyond what they currently have, that are unique and which fit in with my experience since I do not have a teaching degree. I was (finally!) asked to provide a detailed course outline for the summer session, expand that for the fall session, and was given the bonus of networking through the college to their many regional industries for freelance work. It's a start(over) for which I am grateful and optimistic.
It also fits with my old school (too old school?) passion that, while the internet has it's place for research, communication and networking, it doesn't replace the pleasant tactile experience of books, photos and art in printed, textural form. Thanks guys, for listening. If anyone's out there who also needs a sounding board, I'm here.
