Denise - Bio From her teens, selling local vegetables from her own small van, Denise Brown knew she wanted to be a business woman. Taking time out for further studies and work experience only made the passion to work for herself stronger.
In the 1980s various ventures proved successful but she knew that her decision to start a family would mean the long hours she had to work to make a profit would be impossible to maintain. She made a decision. She would put her ambitions on hold to be a full time mum.
Two children and several years later, Denise decided it was time to get back into the workforce. She first began work in sales and then in radio advertising. Although this was valuable experience, the longing to have her own business soon took over again.
Her break came when circumstances led her to identify a need in the market. There was a shortage of companies offering trades to the construction industry. Denise stepped in and with no experience but a lot of determination; she was soon supplying trades personnel to construction companies in the UK and overseas. She took the company from 0 - £5m turnover in just 18 months.
Denise became proficient in managing the huge amounts of money associated with this type of industry, but her lack of experience came back to haunt her when she discovered she was insufficiently covered to cope with a lucrative deal that turned bad. Through no fault of her own she found herself back to square one and having to pick up the pieces – financially and emotionally.
Despite personal tragedy, ill-health and the responsibility of having to bring up her children alone, she somehow found the fortitude to start over again. Her determination paid off. She had already brought her business back from the ashes to become a company with a £3m turnover when the effects of the recession on the construction industry convinced her to diversify.
Denise decided to look at the food and beauty industries as a means of expansion. Although she had experience with food businesses, she had none within the beauty industry, especially alternative surgery. Getting involved with a franchise operation seemed the best way to meet this shortfall and she’s on target to achieve a £1m turnover in the next year to 18 months.
Denise’s extensive hands-on experience of building lucrative businesses from scratch spans some 20 plus years. Apart from the practicalities of handling the finances, managing staff, overheads and legislation, she has the strength of character required to overcome the emotional toll and succeed where others would fail.
When asked how she’s managed to achieve so much, she explains that being honest and generous in business accounts for a lot. True to her word, Denise now uses the challenges that she has faced and overcome to help others realise their own dream of building a business they can be proud of.
