The Risk of Advertising

As a small business owner, I’m sure you can relate to the struggles of getting your brand, your message, and your products and services to your eagerly awaiting customers—you know, those people who, in a perfect world, beat down your door to make a purchase or flock to your website, generating thousands of hits and credit card transactions per day. Ok, so the world isn’t perfect; however, with some time and patience, great things can happen. Advertising is expensive and often doesn’t generate the kind of leads you expect. Who wants to risk $5,000.00 on a newspaper ad, radio spot, or direct mail campaign when there are no guarantees?

So what’s a small business owner to do—GET INFORMED! Knowledge is power my friends. You can’t reduce the risk of advertising, but you can reduce the COST of the risk. Learn how to work the social networks, advertise in free directories, hold your own networking event, market your industry experience and blog, blog, blog—the Internet has made all of these things possible and more. Use websites like sup.biz, openforum.com and biznessdoor.com to get on the social scene free of charge and be sure to ask questions, gain insight, but most importantly provide value. Remember to stay active and visible. If you have information someone else can use, POST IT! Learn from your peers. Find out what they’re doing and what they aren’t—there is power and value in information. I look forward to exchanging brilliant ideas and building new business relationships with all of you.

Happy Networking! Kanika W.

Philanthropy and Small Business--A Beautiful Partnership

Last month I saw a YouTube video featuring, Kristin Tillquist, author of Capitalizing on Kindness: Why 21st Century Professionals Need to be Nice. The video got me thinking, how can I use my business to extend my philanthropic reach, generate brand awareness, and make a positive impact in my community? With the current economy, charitable contributions are down more than ever, and while your own perso

What's Facebook Got to Do with Growing Your Business?

Recently, I ran across a blog that touted 32 ways to use Facebook for business. As of late, I had joined the estimated 250 million people using Facebook socially to connect with old friends; however, I hadn’t really explored the idea of using Facebook to grow my business. I wasn’t sure about using a social network for business; so, the question remained, what does fac

B2B Services that Keep Dollars in Your Pocket

Let’s face it, these are tough times for a lot of people, and as we all seek ways to cut costs, I decided to go on a personal quest to find the top products and/or services that can save a start-up company M-O-N-E-Y.
Here’s what I’ve found:

PHONE: Maxmail: Who ever heard of a local LAN line for $84.00 a year—sounds insane right? Well, if you’re just starting a business and don’t want to pay your local phone company that outrageous mon

FIVE FREE WAYS TO ADVERTISE YOUR BUSINESS IN A DOWN ECONOMY...

With the recent downturn in the economy you may be wondering how to keep your business afloat; as a result, a marketing strategy may be the furthest thing from your mind. Hi Kanika,

Hope all is well with you. I just recently joined sta.rtUp.Biz. Well thought out site, great presentation. I'd like to hear more about what you do. My business is actually thriving in spite of the economic challenges. Coincidentally, I just expanded to Denver and we're looking for additional distributors as well. I look forward to hearing from you.
