I saw your recent question regarding do-it-yourself websites. You may want to read what I have written on a post at Entrepreneur Connect.
Turnkey websites, custom websites based on templates, do-it-yourself websites and even websites created by professional Web designers often times do not meet the W3C standards for web design or the requirements set forth by Google and other search engines.
Being accessible is one of the most critical elements of website design and probably one of most neglected elements when building a website. When I refer to accessibility I am just not talking about the individual who may be visually or physically impaired being able to access information but also those unimpaired individuals who want to access the information on your website. A large number of Web developers are not aware of the guidelines and simply did not design their sites to adhere to those guidelines. Such guidelines involve the size of font type, color palettes, paragraph size and spacing to name a few. US laws do not require businesses to adhere to these guidelines however with the number of court cases growing we expect there to be laws enacted requiring all websites to at least meet minimum standards of accessibility. My company for instance requires all of our sites to meet those requirements thereby eliminating the need to rebuild a website as those laws become commonplace.
An analysis of your business model should be your first endeavor as you set out to build your website. Understanding what it takes for you to sell a customer is critical to the building of your website because in the end isn't that what you are creating a website for? You are investing time and money into a technology that you believe will increase your opportunities for new sales. Once you understand your business sales model then the idea is to try and duplicate as much of that as you can online. Yes, the showing of your work is a critical element of the sales cycle but it is not the only element. Things like your experience, your history, your ability to take credit cards, type of equipment you use are subjects that are often discussed during the course of selling a client. By already having that information available to the client via the web you now have a much more informed and educated potential client. Here are a number of ways a website can enhance the business side of your business. Appointment bookings, release forms, screening questionnaires and a whole litany of other items can be transferred into digital documents and used online saving you and your client a tremendous amount of time and paperwork.
You create an online presence to showcase your abilities and in turn attract new clients and retain old ones. Your website should be thought of as a vehicle or tool to shorten your sales cycle. Essentially, it is a way for your client to see what you have done or get an idea of what you are capable of prior to hiring you. If your website does not accomplish that then you have created what I would like to refer to as a “virtual business card” defeating the whole purpose of having an online presence. It is no better than having a website listed on a business card and handing out that business card to 1000 people resulting in 1000 people coming to your website. You will get no more people visiting your website than the number of business cards you hand out. A very labor-intensive activity and a costly one when you think of the investment made in a website. If you were deciding to wire your house would you do it yourself or hire a professionnal? This is not about your capabilities but your experience in doing it i.e. do-it-yourself websites, basic templated websites anda lot o we developers leave you wth a virtual business card that you still will have to drive people to instead of the site doing the work for you.
