Steps to Start & Build a Successful Business
Would you agree that the standard of every education system is to teach how to get a job, be an employee not how to have your own business?
Educating prospective entrepreneurs and business owners how to start and build a successful business while learning to avoid wasting money and time is part of my passion.
Consider these issues you need to answer while comparing what is available as an income choice. Write down your goals to have a visual perspective and how these fit into them. Including your spouse, partner or trusted friend in your search gives you the benefit of an extra set of eyes and ears that could help you avoid a costly emotional decision or notice something that you may have overlooked, etc.
What kind of time can you commit to the endeavor? If part time, what would be your weekly schedule? Remember this could/will be time above & beyond your job & away from family.
Additionally Harvard Business School suggests you look at these 5 areas when considering starting or building a business & I suggest you get answers that satisfy your individual needs and goals.
1. The Company - What do others say about the company? Read what Business, Investment, Professional and Industry Publications say about the company. They spend a lot of money investigating who they are going to publish. Utilize these resources.
2. The Need & Marketplace -Is there a need for the services or products in the current market? How hard are you going to have to work to market the product or service? Who are your competitors and the marketing methods they use? This can give you an idea of your marketing costs to stay competitive.
3. The Product - Is it something you would use and be proud to share with your family and friends? What are your start-up and overhead costs? Consider other expenses like the need for keeping inventory, pay shipping, have employees, a physical location, advertising, etc.
4. The Compensation - How long will it take for your business venture to be making a profit? For example, a Subway Franchise contract costs $500,000, above their initial requirements, does not include the retail space, equipment, product, employees, etc. The average ROI is 5 years for most successful franchises!
5. The Timing - Find out how many competitors you'll be up against for a share of the market? For example, now would not be a good time to open a cell phone business. Your effort to profit within the market would have a low return on investment because of the high saturation level. Another example is the wellness industry. It has varied branches that are still within a high profitability range but the market share narrows as more companies enter the industry.
Additionally beneficial is learning about the Business S Curve and what happens when an industry hits 2% market share.
An ideal opportunity would be with an established, reputable company in an industry with little or no competition that has a low start-up investment, a high ROI in the shortest time that meets your goals and a product or service you personally find value in.
