"The Cultural arts are essential to the quality of life."
WHO ARE WE? CHIUMBA (
Chiumbo) is a Kenyan word/state, which means: Small child/creation. http://www.chiumba.org
Chiumba Ensemble, Inc. was born Sept. 1990 in the State of Florida. We are a non-profit multi-disciplinary cultural organization that provides, fosters, encourages and develops arts & culture programs, both in and out of school settings. Our programs are designed to educate through dance, music, art and drama. We offer classes, workshops, lectures, seminars and special cultural diversity events.
Our mission is to touch everyone who's thirsty for West African, Yoruba, Caribbean, and Latin cultural experiences through art, music, drama, dance, history and philosophy.
We are able to service many of the rural areas in Central Florida with the help of Commuter Taxi.com transportation and others, i.e. libraries.
We are constantly seeking alternative ways to fund our programs as traditional funding sources become scarce. In the past we were able to offer our programs for free or at reduced rates but we will no longer be able to provide these services without help from those who see the value of the programs we conduct.
Therefore we accept: Vehicle donations, buildings, land donations, items for Botanica Nana Buruku our unique gift shops, gifts, and monetary donations.
ALL donations are tax deductible. All proceeds raised from our programs/events are used to provide cultural events and programs, which educate, preserve and enhance our quality of life.
We all have important missions, values and ideas, things we care about and want to share. Sometimes we feel our art, culture and customs can even change the world, and we want to let other people know how they can join in and make all our lives better.

I'm a Babalorisa in the Lukumi tradition, and I started writing the Orisha Cycle of Dance Dramas, subsequent to reading and performing the late Pepe Carill's Shango de Ima, at the Nuyorican Poets Cafe in the mid-nineties. There are seven plays currently in the cycle and I'm in the process of writing new material as we speak.
