There are only two times that people feel overwhelmed or spammed....
1) The first 48 hours. As a new member everyone is trying to be the first to say hello or pitch their product or service. If you can last through the first 2 days, then it becomes real manageable.
2) Accepting friend requests blindly. Before you accept any friend request ask them a question. If they answer it well enough, then make them a friend. Too many members get excited and accept every friend request they get. Once you accept them as a friend, you are essentially giving them the right to send you email about anything and everything.
If they can not answer your question, then they are here for just one thing.
As for taking out ads on your site, this is a great place to network. Are you an expert or newbie to online social networking?
