The origins of my interest in fiction are rooted in my early childhood. As a child, I loved to sleep over at my friend’s house on Friday nights and watch the late night science fiction movies. I have fond memories of ducking in and out of my sleeping bag on the living room floor while being both captivated and frightened. I also spent many restless nights replaying episodes of The Outer Limits and The Twilight Zone in my mind. These programs stimulated my imagination such that I thought that the porcelain black panther in the living room came alive and roamed the house after dark. Also, I was convinced that the creaking and popping sounds of the floors in our house were invisible spirits wandering about after everyone had gone to bed.

I occasionally faked a fever so that I could stay home from school and read science fiction books of which the writings of Jules Verne were my favorites. In college, I discovered the C.S. Lewis and soon was experiencing other worlds in his Space Trilogy and Chronicles of Narnia. These were my favorite multi-book stories until a friend suggested I try reading The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien. This led to The Lord Of The Rings trilogy which I read several times prior to the movies. These stories became my favorites because the characters were both familiar and different. Hobbits, elves, orcs, trolls were like the races and cultures of man in that they were related but different. I also was drawn to the theme of the potential for greatness of even the seemingly small and weak creatures such as hobbits. Interwoven throughout these stories were the struggle of good and evil as well as the discovery of purpose and realizing one’s potential.

My education and career over the past thirty-two years have been in the Environmental Sciences which are hardly conducive to fiction writing. I graduated with two MS degrees from the University of Wisconsin and worked as a consultant and then as an environmental specialist for a mid-western utility company. After raising two children, I found myself a grandparent with a successful wife who spent several days a week traveling as a director for a dental corporation. My wife claims that being a grandpa has helped me discover my second childhood. I find there is some truth to this as I can act goofy, spoil my grandchildren and then give them back to their parents.

While driving alone on a work trip, a thought occurred to me that I should write a book about what the Bible says about various subjects. I immediately dismissed this as just a day dream. However, I have read the Bible daily for thirty years, spoken in many churches as a member of the Gideons, taught Sunday School and served as a deacon so I felt I could help others to understand what I consider the most important book ever written. Two years later my first book, Truth Seeker: Straight Talk From The Bible, was written and three years after that it was released by the American Book Publishing Company.

I had no plans or aspirations to write fiction until my son challenged me after he started to write a fictional book. I again went into denial about doing this feeling completely inadequate and not knowing where to begin. After several months of failure, a scene from a story began to play in my mind. I captured it on paper and it became the seed around which further scenes came to me that developed into The Past and Future King. Writing this book has been an adventure since it developed once scene or chapter at a time. Thus, I literally experienced it as I wrote it and found that it was very much like watching a movie unfold in my mind. Although it is customary to call me the author, I believe that I am more akin to a scribe who has merely dictated what has been revealed to me. Thus, it is with humble thanks and wonder that I have written this story which has connected me to my creator.
