Produced in partnership with Videovision located in South Africa, the television version won high ratings when broadcast on ETV one week after President Obama's inauguration.

Producer-director, Danny Schechter, was previously a director of the feature documentary, 'Viva Madiba: A Hero for All Seasons,' celebrating Nelson Mandela's life and 90th birthday in July, 2008.

Tuesday, 20 January 2009 ETV ACQUIRES BROADCAST RIGHTS TO VIDEOVISION ENTERTAINMENT'S BARACK OBAMA DOCUMENTARY FEATURE

Film producer, Anant Singh announced today that etv has acquired the South African broadcast rights to the Videovision Entertainment documentary feature, Barack Obama: People's President. The film will be broadcast Tuesday, 27 January at 9.30pm e.tv and eNews Channel while the DVD will be released in South Africa on DVD in February 2009. Barack Obama: People's President is produced by Singh, written, produced and directed by Danny Schechter (Countdown to Freedom: The Ten Days that Changed South Africa, Viva Madiba: A Hero For All Seasons) and Executive Produced by Sudhir Pragjee, Sanjeev Singh, Helena Spring and Rory O'Connor.

Barack Obama: People's President shows how his campaign mantra of "Yes We Can" became "Yes We Did" astonishing Americans and exciting world opinion. This is the story of how Obama inspired and organized millions of new voters to support him, and how the amazing potential of the internet as a communications and networking tool was used effectively to canvass potential voters. The film goes inside the grass roots campaign and also speaks with activists, journalists and political leaders as well as South Africa's Archbishop Desmond Tutu and Rivonia trialist, Ahmed Kathrada who took Obama to Robben Island. The film also incorporates footage of Obama's African tour of August 2006.

ATLANTA, (GA) Febuary 1, 2009. NATEPERKINS.TV: Inauguration TV coverage schedule and times --Negotiations have started with South African and United States TV networks for the broadcast rights to the film, entitled Barack Obama: People’s President.
They have been working against the clock to get it out as soon as possible after the election, and a spokesperson for Singh said last night that they hoped to tell South African audiences later this week which TV channel had won the rights.
It was mainly shot in America and includes an interview with Obama himself - but there are also interviews with political leaders like South Africa’s Desmond Tutu and Ahmed Kathrada, who took Obama on a visit to Robben Island. It includes previously unseen footage and interviews.
