With the economy tanking, many small business owners are using promotions, sales and discounts to boost profits this holiday season. Coupons are a natural fit, since so many consumers are actively looking for ways to save money. Before you run a discount promotion though, make sure you take a look at the 5 specific steps to coupon success below to ensure you’re setting your discount promotion up correctly.

1. Specific product (or service)
Make sure your coupon clearly states what product (or products, if necessary) is included in the discount offer. You don’t want to give away too much, and there are consumers out there who will try to take advantage of a coupon that isn’t specific. Leave no room for error or misinterpretation of what product is included in the discount promotion.

2. Specific dollar amount (or offer)
Make sure the offer is very clear. If you’re offering 10% off before tax, your coupon should say that. As in #1 above, don’t leave room for misinterpretation of your offer.

3. Specific start date (or time)
If you want your discount promotion to begin on a certain day or at a certain time, make sure that date or time is clearly communicated through your coupon. The last thing you want is for customers to show up looking for a promotion that hasn’t started yet, and then have to honor the discount because customers were not informed of the start date in advance. Without clearly communicating the start date in advance, you might be accused of using a bait and switch tactic, which could lead to legal trouble.

4. Specific end date (or time)
You don’t want your discount promotion to go on indefinitely, so make sure you include an end date with your coupon. Furthermore, an end date can create a sense of urgency around the promotion that can motivate consumers to act sooner rather than later (or not at all).

5. Specific audience
Make sure the right people receive your coupon. Take the time to define your target audience, find that audience, and then deliver your coupon to that audience. Your efforts are useless if the right people don’t get your coupon and don’t know about it.
