Article Writing: 8 Reasons Why You Need Discipline

Without a doubt, the hardest part about article writing is getting started. Many writers and freelance copywriters (and yes, that does include me) hate to write but love it when they have finished writing. It is getting that initial idea or first paragraph onto paper/screen that can seem daunting.

Fear of failure is something a lot of people experience no matter what field they work in. We are all guilty of putting tremendous pressure upon ourselves, thinking that whatever it is we are writing must be brilliant.

The fact of the matter is that no writer, or person for that matter, is perfect. Everyone has flaws and having imperfections is the perfect reason why more writing should be done. Yes, I hate to admit it, but I am not perfect – pretty damn close though.

Discipline

Don’t you just hate that word? It may send a shudder down you spine but discipline is important. Without it, nothing will get done or written. Having discipline causes any writer, especially those who write articles for the internet, (like yours truly) to think clearly and go beyond his or her mundane concerns so the focus is on the output and not on the ego.

Discipline helps to:

• Achieve focus
• Break a topic down – smaller subject chunks are easier to get your head round
• You to just let go – don’t force your writing, natural writing is easier to read
• Write – ignore distractions
• Stop you editing – at least for the time being, your first draft is the place to let your ideas flow. Editing comes at the end of the process.
• Make you re-read and review the article
• Relax – leave the article for a while after writing it for at least a day
• Make yourself do re-writes – taking a break from the article means you can review it with a fresh pair of eyes

In summary, whether you like the word or not, discipline helps you start and finish a task in a methodical way that actually works. All yon needs is discipline to carry it through.
