As I listened to the inauguration speech of President Barack Obama, I found myself reflecting on a number of matters.
Firstly, I congratulate the American people for having the courage to elect a President who is determined to reunite them. When President Obama succeeds in his stated goal of gathering all the people to rebuild America in the spirit of the founding fathers, he will have done the world a great service. For the last four years, we in the small nations have watched dismayed and helpless as the USA stumbled towards the present social and economic disaster.
I listened to a speech the like of which I have not heard since 1960 when I was similarly inspired by John F Kennedy, or 1963 by Martin Luther King. I sincerely hope his rhetoric will be backed up with determined action not seen since the race to put a man on the moon.
When President Obama wins the support he needs from all his people to transform the USA by collectively meeting the great challenge posed by the present crisis, and makes the promised radical shift in the USA’s international approach to global issues, the rest of world will heave a collective sigh of relief. We need a renewed sense of purpose and a return to proper ethical conduct in all our business institutions and our international affairs. As a citizen of a small nation I am acutely aware that we cannot achieve this on our own, we need a strong and purposeful America to pursue the global public good.
For these reasons I ask you to “get in behind” President Obama and support his determination. The rest of the world wishes you well on your journey.
