Recently I read a post on Yahoo by Jeff Lehman, author of
The Frugal Millionaires, which gave me a strong sense of “Aha.” I had always known that not everybody who makes millions will abandon caution, live high on the wire, and flaunt their riches. Some wise millionaires retain a sense of caution and frugality that keeps them flowing in the money while others may have been “taken” by scam artists or may have overinvested in a down market.
I had just such a personal experience a few weeks ago when my health club sponsored a casino night. My favorite game is Roulette and I planned to stay at the table for hours.
I started with the basic number of chips that each of us was allotted for a minimal fee.
My way of playing is to keep my odds as high as possible, playing on the four corners of numbers so that when I place 5 chips on the table I am covering 20 numbers. As I start to win some additional chips, that is when I begin to take more chances and place chips between two or three numbers or even directly on a single number.
Other people at this event were not so cautious. Some of them started with the basic amount and placed all their chips directly on a few numbers. One of these players actually was a winner a few times. It looked as if she was piling in the chips. Others were impressed and commenting that they wish they could do what she was doing. She continued flamboyantly to place her chips haphazardly wherever she felt, with no system and no caution. When she ran out of chips, she just purchased more – and continued her reckless style. Needless to say, by the end of the evening, I was the only one still sitting at that table with the chips gradually piling up higher. If only I followed my own wisdom with my daily living expenses.
Here are some of the ways that frugal millionaires keep their money growing:
• Save thousands while still spending
• Have a spending philosophy and system which allows for delayed gratification, carefully timed
purchases, living below their means, and not having a sense of entitlement
• Shop efficiently and don’t view shopping as a sport
• Buy used, off lease, fuel efficient cars
• Bring half the meal home when they eat, bring wine from home and skip dessert
• Eat healthy meals at home, inviting friends and family and getting their kids involved
• Buy something new and donate something used to charity
• Not be the first to buy new technology; wait until the bugs are worked out
• Buy mainstream computers with higher capacity hard drives, sufficient memory, and a cost
effective processor
• Buy green if it helps the environment and lowers their costs
My question to you is this. Are you living and spending like a frugal millionaire or are you flaunting your assets like a nouveau riche newbie whose entire upscale lifestyle can topple with just one bad market call? Here's to your frugal millionaire success story.
