graphic design and passion

when it comes to work do something that you like best. you need to have passion for the thing you do and it will show. there is always a niche market for your passion.

what i find in the field of graphic design ... there are people who just want to earn it as a living, but do not have a passion for drawing or art. that is why those people get no where and stuck in production (you just follow someone else design and duplicated with a style guide), but not designing and show concept. the foundation is not there. drawing is the basic skills of any design. you don't always have the computer with you. you can draw and have your idea and concept on paper. so start drawing, draw anything ... people, houses, what you have in front of you. learn about art from drawing, painting, photography and other art forms and mediums and go to art museum and learn from old masters like caravaggio or michelangelo. or just go to your local art museum and start from there.

from that you can leverage yourself to an art director position with knowledge and expertise with the computer. not many art director can use the computer like a production artist or a graphic designer. it is best that you have the idea and get it going by doing it yourself, too.

there are many bad designs out there, not necessarily a bad thing. we do need production artist, but what we do not need are production artist who wants to be designer with no foundation.

and also team work is very important. because as a graphic designer you input your idea with art director and creative director. what i see that is important with those people, they have been in the business for a long time and they have eyes for design. i have worked with some wonderful art directors and creative directors who taught me so much more than just design. design is about life and what you learn and your personality will show in your design and it is personal in some aspect. do not be afraid to get criticize, it is just part of the learn process.

most importantly have passion! in anything you do and the money will follow.
