Honolulu City Lights

Honolulu City Lights, one of the city’s most treasured Christmas traditions, began in 1985 with a single Christmas tree on the grounds of Honolulu Hale (City Hall). Over the years, the month-long event has grown considerably but it has always included as its focal point, a lighted 50-foot Christmas tree. The holiday tree connects lighted Christmas trees and buildings spread out over a “corridor of Christmas lights” through Chinatown, Downtown, the Capitol District and the Civic Center area.

Opening night will be on the first Saturday in December and includes the popular Electric Light Parade, a star-studded holiday concert, decorated Christmas trees and wreaths in the courtyard of Honolulu Hale and the traditional lighting of the huge City Christmas tree.

The Honolulu City Lights Christmas celebration is unique because of the giant holiday characters situated throughout the grounds of Honolulu Hale. In addition to the 21-foot-tall Shaka Santa, who sits cooling his toes in the City Hall fountain, there are other larger-than-life figures like the Snow Family that provide countless photo settings for families celebrating the holidays.
