Short answer: Work diligently, work consistently, and don't give up.

Long answer: all companies are different, and what works in one company might not work in another. You should learn from your upline -- ask them what works and what you should do to succeed.

Draw on them for help. They've found out from experience what works and what doesn't, and they're interested in your success. The fundamental ideas, though, are the same in any company.

Do what a distributor/associate/whatever is supposed to do in your company -- retail products, sell services, consume products, whatever -- and find others to do the same. Teach them to do what you do.

*Duplication* is the key to success in MLM. You're not supposed to go out and enroll the world, or sell something to everybody on the planet. You're supposed to find a FEW people who want to build a business, and help them do it. More importantly, teach THEM to do what a distributor does, AND go out and find a few people to work with, AND teach those new people. Until you have "taught your people to teach their people to teach," you have not really duplicated yourself.

Keep plugging away. Unless you're incredibly good at this, it will take time to build a group. It takes time to find good people and teach them what they need to know. Sometimes your best people will give up and drop out. Sometimes it can be very discouraging. Sometimes you may be tempted to give up.

(And if your company isn't working very well, maybe you should. But if the company's working well, and others are succeeding, you need to take a look at what YOU'RE doing that isn't working. It may be that you wouldn't do any better in another company, even if the grass looks greener, because you're doing the wrong things.)

It is a sad fact that a very small percentage of people who enroll in any particular MLM will succeed big. This is NOT, however, a fatal flaw of MLM; it's a reflection of real life. 90%+ of small businesses fail within 1-5 years -- and the owners lose a whole lot more than the few hundred dollars an MLM person typically invests. 98%+ of corporate employees will never achieve executive levels. 95% of 65-year-old retirees in the US (according to insurance & Social Security statistics) are dead or broke. The sad fact is, very few people succeed big in ANY endeavor. Most people simply will not do what it takes to succeed. MLM is no different in this regard.

However, many people get into an MLM with the idea that it's some kind of "easy road to riches". It's not. It takes work. It takes time and dedication. But most people don't see that, either because their sponsor misled them with rosy predictions of instant wealth, or because they chose to hear the easy story. People like this enroll and don't do anything, or give it a try but give up after a few months. This is where the vast majority of "MLM failures" comes from.

The biggest problem with MLM is that it's "too easy" to get into it (usually no more than a few hundred dollars), so it's "too easy" to get out. With only a few hundred bucks committed, it's easy for someone to say "Ah, heck, I talked to 4 people and none of them were interested. This doesn't work! Guess I wasted $200."

You should approach your business as if it was a "real" business, one that you had invested your life savings into. If you had sunk $200,000 into your MLM business, would you let 4 "no"s stop you? Heck no!! You'd get back OUT there and KEEP working until you MADE it work, because you had too darn much money in it to give up! Well, guess what? That's what makes MLM work too -- that dedication to keep working until you make it work.

If you work consistently, and effectively, and build your group faster than the faint-hearted people drop out, your group will slowly but steadily build. And if you've taught your people the correct ideas of "work consistently, work effectively, and teach your people how to duplicate your efforts", you should see a consistent rate of growth. It will probably take longer than you'd like (hey, that's the way life works!), but as long as you keep working at it, your income will eventually build to the level you want.

The problem is, most people don't do this. Most people who get into MLM give it a half-hearted try, then give up the first time they get a "no" and complain that "It doesn't work." Only the people who determine to put in the effort, and actually DO what it takes to succeed, will stick it out and end up on top.

This is what Jane Marks - a very successful network marketer - said
''If you want to make a full time living on the net, which may become more and more necessary as more and more people lose their jobs, then invest in yourself and buy a business that will set you up to succeed.

Most importantly you need a "Yes, I can Attitude". Without that, you will never make it. With it there is nothing to stop you.''

Donald Trump was on the Oprah Show and she asked Donald the question: If you were not doing what you are doing now with real estate, what business would you be involved in?"

Donald quickly answered "Network Marketing".

You should have heard the hisses and boos from the audience.

Donald responded "That is why I am up here and you are down theere".

Sometimes our 'impression' of what something is or our perceived connotation of a word such as "MLM" or "network marketing" closes us up to new opportunities. The bad rap associated with MLM is actually as a result of some 'people' involved in network marketing.

But would one let perception and biases glue their eyes shut and thus miss out on recurring revenue sources? i listen to anything at least once before making a "no-go or go" decision.

People tire of referrals, building downlines, rah rah meetings, etc. But the problem is two-fold... the person trying to bring you on board and the company business model. Once you are able to perform your research and discern the bad from the excellent, you are 95% there.

I vote that you should be true to yourself and opern your eyes to new opportunities.

God Bless

I believe you must have a why and your why must make you cry! Your why helps keep you focused when the distractions come and they surely will. It keeps you determined and on the path to fulfilling your dream. Secondly you must get behind a product that you are passionate about. You can't really push something you don't believe in yourself. Lastly, I will say you must be positive and spend all of your time with positive like minded individuals. We all need motivation from time to time no matter what. We must always be aware of the Dream Killer's and never let anyone take our dreams away. Give yourself permission to succeed! Believe you can!

WOW....some very interesting comments on the wonderful world of MLM. Why is it that 97% of all people involved in the MLM industry spend more money every month than they make? Why do so many MLM "Leaders" constantly jump from one opportunity to the next, taking their people and others for the promise of a new opportunity? Why do these same leaders stand up in these new opportunities telling people how much money they are making and claiming it only took them 6 months, never mentioning of course the many people they brought with them from their last company? Why do companies breech about multiple streams of income UNTIL you actually sign-up with them and then they tell you that you can only be in ONE? Why doesn't anyone tell you that residual income doesn't last forever? The majority of the customers you get today will NOT be your customers a year from now, in fact the statistics are on average 4.5 months before they find something "new". Why do so many with a POSITIVE mindset and CONSTANT action FAIL in network marketing? Okay my rant is over but as leaders we need to start delivering more truth and less fiction. We need to focus on helping others make money before we run off on a recruiting mission. We need to sell the opportunity for what it is...a chance to make some extra money on a part-time basis and NOT to replace your current salary in 6 months. We have a responsibility to ourselves and to this great industry to begin to help people change their lives. No industry offers a greater self development program. No industry offers you the opportunity to create close life long friendships. I love this industry but we need to make some changes or the negative stigma will continue to grow and it will effect everybody.

Make it a great day!!!

An attitude of, 'Yes I Can', will always put the person ahead of the game ! When a person puts on confidence, he or she is already well dresssed !

Excellent blog Marianne. In my experience, the most important step is the first one. Do your homework and be certain you fully understand the company, the products/services, AND the compensation plan. Interview the people who would be your upline - not just the person sponsoring you, but the people above them, above them, etc.

This is going to puzzle and perhaps put off some people, but pay attention to your body sense of those people. If you experience any discomfort or gnawing sense of dis-ease, take time to figure out why. Your body doesn't lie. It is important to have successful people who have not only the knowledge of how to succeed, but the integrity and honest desire to help their downline achieve maximum success.

I'm nearly 70 years old and have had the opportunity to learn from my experiencing of a number of MLM "opportunities". All of the points you've made are quite valid. One thing I found that spelled defeat for the majority of people was the MLM company's recommendation to "make a list of everyone you know - friends, family, your doctor, dentist, hair stylist, etc.". This is called your "warm market". The problem with this is that these people have known you for a long time - particularly your family and close friends - and they are the people most likely to shoot you down! "You can't do this - it's a pyramid, a ponzi scheme" and a myriad of other rejection messages from the people closest to you leads to the early exit of a high percentage of people. In most cases, their dream will quickly be shattered and they will take the easy way out, agreeing with their critics.

Which leads me to what I believe to be THE critical factor to your success after you've done your homework - you absolutely MUST "have a dream". Visualize the life style you are seeking. "Experience it" in every aspect. SEE it, FEEL it, HEAR it, and SMELL it. If your dream is to have the time and money freedom to travel the globe and experience different cultures, to spend time in luxurious resorts, or whatever your dream is - put yourself inside that dream, see yourself walking along a beautiful beach, smell the salt water, feel the breeze coming off the ocean - see yourself confidently standing on stage in front of thousands of people and sharing your knowledge with them. Feel what it is like to help others succeed. If you find the right vehicle (company, product/service, compensation plan, upline), have a big enough dream and NEVER lose sight of it, nothing and nobody can prevent you from succeeding. The only person who can assure your success or failure is you. Know that. Evaluate yourself with honesty and clarity before starting any venture. Do your homework. Build your dream. Then go fot it! If you have the desire and belief in yourself, you will experience stunning success.

Well done, Marianne!

Big key to success in MLM: best compnies to succeed in are those tah sell either consumables or memberships/subscriptions or "renewables". Add to that a "one-call close" and you have the ideal situation. Finally, to awaken recruits that they have a lot invested in their business, do what a successful young couple in Michigan did: the cost to start was just a few hundred dollars, yet they-together"hypnotized themselves until they could see wirting out a $250,000 check to start their business! It became very real and vivid to them, and they are still all-stars in the MLM world. So, a recap: reusable products, typically one-call close, and imagining 3-4 more zeroes on the check you wrote for your startup payment!
