Anyone who's in business for themselves should be in search of new ways to generate a massive amount of income. Once a person has that figured out, their money worries should be over. RIGHT?

WRONG...because people can't reach their goal alone...we all need each other in order to strive. It doesn't matter how many referrals you get as an independent business owner, you'll always have to work to get paid, and that's why I always lean towards the "B" quadrant model that Robert Kiyosaki talks about in his book, "The Rich Dad Cash Flow Quadrant." He explains that there are four (4) quadrants that people fall in: "E" (Employee), "S" (Self-Employed), "B" (Business Owner), and "I" (Investor). Kiyosakis says that each of these quadrants represent the way that a person earns their income. Different skills, personalities, and mind sets are necessary depending upon which quadrant a person represents.

LEVERAGING MY TIME WILL ALWAYS BE KEY FOR ME...

And, by leveraging time, I mean utilizing the services of others. If the same applies for you, and the services of other people is what we all need in order to maintain a successful business, then how do we get people to not only join us in business, but want to continue on in business with us? That's easy, and I'll share the answer with you below.

But for now, I'm sure that most of us have heard at least one of the below sayings as it relates to the benefits of getting involved with a Network Marketing company.

1. work whenever you want, from wherever you want!
2. being home to see your children grow up!
3. having more time to spend with your family!
4. take a 20 second commute to work!
5. having more time and money to take family vacations!
6. no more rush hour traffic!
7. tax savings!

Who do you know that wouldn't want any one of these benefits? So, if there are so many great benefits associated with getting involved in a home-based business, why isn't everyone joining us in business? Sad, but true, there's a lot of people who may have a desire for these benefits, who just don't believe that they have what it takes to be successful in a business of their own. Although, all of the above benefits sound great, people need to know that they can do what it takes to be successful.

Working in corporate America for 20 years; working as an independent real estate agent for 2 years; and now working for a small business owner for the past 2 years, I believe that I know what it takes to make a business flourish, and also what it takes to make a business crumble.

Below is my list...please feel free to share yours with me as well.

LEADERSHIP

Without it, your business is destined to FAIL! Every successful business, be it a large corporation, or a small business owned operation, should have someone in place who knows about the everyday operations of the department they oversee (corporations), or the company as a whole (small businesses). When the department or company is left to run itself, it's doomed for failure. And, the same rule applies when you operate your own home-based business. You will have to know as much about the company you represent in order to lead/direct others to where they should go to get answers. As the CEO of a company, a person should have leadership qualities, because they will be looked to for answers.

TRAINING
The number one reason why people don't apply to work at specific companies is because they don't have the required skills. For example, unless you went to school to become a doctor, you wouldn't apply for that position. And, unless you went to school to become an engineer, you wouldn't apply for that position either. Not saying that doctors and engineers are special people, because they aren't. It's the profession that one chooses to pursue that gives them the opportunity to apply for a specific position. I wouldn't apply for an accounting position, because I know nothing about the field, but if I went to school to learn about it, and then get all of the certification, then I'd qualify. For now, I'll stick with what I know, and that's people and real estate. And I only know these things because I've studied them.

When it comes to Network Marketing the playing field is wide open for everyone to join us in business. So, if that's the case, why don't more people join us in business? It's because they don't believe that they'll be able to succeed, which is why training is so important. Training allows a person to grasp a concept and understand exactly what they need to do to be successful. I remember my very first job working at the telephone company as a 611 repair clerk. When I was hired for that job, I knew nothing about it, but prior to taking my first call the company prepared me for it, by way of classroom training. New hires weren't left to figure out things as they came up. We knew exactly what to say and do when encountered with customer complaints.

SUPPORT and GUIDANCE
Once training has been implemented, support and guidance is the next step to a person being successful. Although classroom training is very important, it’s not all that’s required. If you want a “newbie” to progress in their new venture, then actual hands-on training is vital. It’s wonderful to sit in a classroom, or in front of a computer, but it's nothing like jumping in getting your feet wet. We need to be on three-way calls with our new people, and doing whatever it takes, until they feel comfortable.

For me it wasn't until I took my first few calls as a 611 repair clerk that I began to feel comfortable with what I was doing. But, it wasn't too long after that, that I was able to overlap and do more than one thing at a time while taking customer reports, but it took time. Even though we'd just finished our classroom training, we weren't just thrown on the phones in hopes that what we learned in the classroom would stick, because it wouldn't have. That would have been a disaster waiting to happen. We were still under the guidance of our instructor, who was there for support. That person was there to observe and make sure that we had our questions answered.

And, that's the same thing that we need to do with our "newbies." Just because someone has joined us in business, doesn't mean that we can sign them up and leave them. What we learn in the classroom is theory, but it's not until we actually get out in the field and begin to practice, and ask questions, and make a few mistakes, that it actually begins to come together.

FOLLOW-UP
Not only do you need to follow-up, but you need to follow through and make sure that you're providing the support that your “newbie” needs. Now that they've gotten the training, support and guidance, they're now on their own, but they need to know that they're not alone.

Did you know that everyone who has an interest in your opportunity, but hasn't signed up yet has one major concern. And that is, CAN I DO IT? Before anyone will consider joining you in business, the CAN I DO IT factor, must be addressed in such a way that a prospect believes that they can do what you're doing. And, until they believe they can, benefits don't have much meaning for them in these economic times. Because people like simple, as good as the product or service may be, people aren't willing to step out and be courageous, when the security of working for someone else is much more appealing.

While most people focus on recruiting, we know that REAL success is based on people duplicating the efforts of those who have come before them. The way that you introduce your prospect to your business is often the key reason whether they join your business or not. In order for people to join you in business, they must feel comfortable presenting the opportunity to others.

IT DOESN'T MATTER HOW GREAT YOUR BUSINESS OPPORTUNITY IS, IF NO ONE IS JOINING YOU! Please remember, that based on how the opportunity was presented to them will make a person believe that's the same way they will need to approach others. People need to feel comfortable knowing they can do what you do, and really believe they can be successful, or they will never join you in business. The majority of people will opt for security every time.

What people are looking for is a vehicle to help them succeed! Duplication is the key, and your business must be easy to duplicate.

The key to success in business and in life is to take 'inspired action, not 'motivated action'. Motivated action comes from fear. Inspired action comes when you are at peace with what is.

Hello Necole,

I enjoyed your well written and thought provoking article and I agree with what you propose.
Just want to add one thing that I believe is paramount to a successful business, any business.
We must always remember we are dealing with people as individuals and it is true, that people don't care how much you know, until they know how much you care.
You must love what you do and care about and respect those who you do it for.

Great article and replies here!

If I had to throw in my 2 cents it would be this:

I have found many fast and many slow ways to grow a business. There are many common sense things people need to learn and there are many business specific topics that can be important to ones success. However, the one thing that I have found to be the "guiding light" so to speak in my businesses, is the ability to put myself in the customers shoes.

No matter what, above all, do you bring value and consistency to your products, services and customer care? If not, most likely you can bring your own business, no matter what it may be, up to par, by turning the table and looking at your business like an outsider would.

To Success,

You forgot about a very critical thing - MARKETING. Without it, it does not matter how much leverage you have or even if you are the greatest leader in the world...if you don't know how to get the word out there and create excitement from prospective customers to want your product enough to pay for them, then your business will NOT flourish.
Kristen Scott Comment by Kristen Scott on June 16, 2009 at 2:11pm
If you want to be successful, you must have meaning in your product or service.
You need to serve a specific need for a specific set of clients.
You have to be on a mission.
Don't be afraid to key in
Stay ahead of the curve...way ahead. Look ahead, not back and stay outside of your own boxes!
Don't be afraid to be incomplete. Everything has room for improvement and that improvement is your next round of products or services.

Do your thing out of passion and love. Do not focus on end result or making money focus on the benefits for your customer.

The secret is in the followup. Excellent customer service means you followup with your customers and business associates.

all it takes is a few things to be successful
1. belief in self, product or service, company, industry
2. commitment to your own success
3. willingness to leave your pittiful friends and family behind
4. be willing to do what ever it taked to make it happen
5. most importantly- treat your business like a big business and not a hobbie from the start.
6. always ask for help ,and not reinvent the wheel.
