It applies not only to writing, but to any endeavor. Even Matthew must agree that he needed the basics, as taught by someone more experienced that himself, before he could improvise and make his own statement. For me, because I'm a Green personality primarily, accurate word usage is very important. I even constantly go through my own writing as I'm typing to correct spelling and grammar. Reading posts from people who are obviously not native to the American version of English can be trying for me, but ones from those who appear native but too lazy to use a spell-check are by far the most challenge.

It is my belief that writing skills are, for the most part very important, and a skill that everyone should apply some effort to develop and maintain.
