Ever wonder..... What is network marketing (NM), or Multi-level Marketing (MLM), or Networking? Is it legal? Is it a good thing? Will it work? Is it for me? Can I make money?

The intent of this paper is to clarify and help you understand not to sell you, pro or con. Before we begin, I believe NM and MLM are the same. In the early days, the industry got a bad reputation for the actions of a few. So the industry took on another name to distance itself from the problem. I do not know which name came first, NM or MLM. Networking is more universal. Networking is passing referrals and receiving referrals from others. Many people today network with customers, with like businesses or all businesses in a certain area. Networking is a very strong marketing tool.

Network Marketing or MLM
Network Marketing is simply, a very efficient way to get a product from the manufacturer to the customer or end user. The system relies on “word of mouth” and independent distributors to market and distribute the product. This saves much in cost of advertising and distribution and allows generous compensation to distributors. This system works very well for products that require demonstration or explanation of benefits or application.

Recruiting other distributors is another income stream for MLM distributors. This is an option in most companies. Some people do not want to recruit. They just want to sell products. They seek supplemental or part time income. People seeking full time income must learn to recruit.

NM or MLM is legal if there is a product or service rendered. A chain letter is not legal.

Training and Support
Successful companies have good training. Successful distributors make sure their recruits are trained. Distributors train by example. New distributors follow along and watch their sponsor introduce the product and the opportunity to prospects furnished by the new distributor. This training cycle is repeated until the new distributor is comfortable making presentations. Training should be duplicatable.

Levels
So, if you join a MLM company, and you are trained by your sponsor, and you train your recruit, what you have is three levels. Your sponsor is level one. You are level two and your recruit is level three. You can add as many people to level three as you can. You keep adding to level three until you find someone that wants to create level four. You work with that person until they have success. If your work and training are duplicatable, over time, your organization can grow too many levels. Most compensation plans reward you greatly for a large organization. So, yes, you can make money networking.

What Kind of Business?
Now that you are started, “what kind of business are you in?” Answer: you are in the people business. People. If this business is for you, you must like people.
