And the obvious... Build a Great Profile Page

-Make it a direct representation of yourself and your business
-Personalize it, add blog posts, 10+ pictures, and YouTube videos

*Although there are boundaries to posting links directly to your own url, there are virtually no limits to promoting your own profile or group which links to your site.

One Final Note:
Networking on Sta.rtUp.biz is no different from any other business networking event that you attend in person. The rules of success are the same.
1) You need to be well dressed - A nice profile and profile picture
2) You have to work the room - 100 comments a day
3) You engage before selling - Thoughtful comments
4) You ask for a business card - Make a friend request

You would never show up to an event in a tank top and start shouting out loud, "I sell insurance!" over and over again. It is rude, people will ignore you, and you will probably be escorted outside by security and told never to come back.

The same is true here.

More people should read this and heed it. Of the 30 or so "Welcome" comments I got, all but one were nothing more than sales pitches. If this were face to face networking most would be like the following example:

"Hi. Welcome. We have common interests. I sell insurance. Here's my card. Call ME if you need insurance. Gotta go, see ya ... bye!"

Cyberspace makes it easy to be insincere. All you have to do is read the comments left for every new member. The same people post the same message to every newbee.

Yes, I understand the whole "being a resource" thing as part of effective networking. But what makes the Resource thing effective in face to face is some sort of connection between two people ... something memorable that I can tuck away in my mind. Basic "canned spam" welcome comments do little to achieve that vital component of effective networking.

Even in the comments on this thread, most people can't help but to attenmpt to thrust themselves down the throat of the reader.

Seems the biggest thing missing from most of the "networking" training is the section on finesse.

Warm Regards,
Michael Crooks

Haha, I'm not going to leave a comment for the sake of it but this is just crucial and timely advice which every member must read. You could make this as a 'toll' page for every new registration at Sta.rtup.biz. Many thanks.
