There are many people who try to achieve what they desire in life. Unfortunately, many people don’t accomplish what they set out to do.

Here are some of the top mistakes that people make, and ways in which these can be avoided.

1. Setting timescales that are impossible to reach

Often, people will set totally unrealistic time frames to achieve goals in their lives. Before deciding on a completion date, take careful consideration of your other commitments. Don’t expect to be able to devote 3 hours every night to a particular goal if you only have one hour of spare time!

2. Failing to write down goals

You must commit your intentions to paper to know exactly what you are aiming for. This also acts as a form of contract with yourself, and you are therefore much more likely to carry it through.

3. Setting goals that are not going to make a marked difference to their lives

Achieving is hard work, so you want to make sure that the benefits of accomplishing your goal will far outweigh all of the effort that has gone into it.

4. Failing to consider the true extent of the work that needs to be done to achieve the result

Before starting on the road to a particular goal, carefully consider what is actually involved to ensure a successful outcome.

5. Setting goals that are far beyond their own capabilities

Be honest with yourself. Are you going to be mentally and physically able to achieve your goal?

6. Trying to achieve something that they do not enjoy doing

A sure way to get your motivation plummeting is to attempt to achieve something that you hate doing. Life is to be enjoyed, so avoid setting goals that aren’t going to fulfill you.

7. Expecting far too much of themselves

The challenges that you set yourself should stretch you, but you shouldn’t be setting yourself up for failure by setting goals that will be too difficult to accomplish.

James,
This was a great article! So many true points on here that we've had to take ever so seriously over the past years and other's don't even think about them. Especially the points you make on 'setting goals' ~ why start something if you don't have a goal that one can accomplish that is a reality and something they can't honestly enjoy? Or, the other point you made...'Expecting far too much of themselves'. This I believe also falls under 'being honest with yourself'. I know with our company's (well, my fiance's as a master stone mason and remodeling/restoring homes) we need to always have a plan with a goal that is consistent with a time limit that is honest with us and our time on the jobs and most importantly, not letting the time we spend on jobs interferre with our personal life. Again, most importantly "Being honest to yourself and to your customers" don't tell a customer you can have something done in a week when you know it will take longer than that.
These are absolutely great points of view in the business world. And, as much as we practice them and have practiced them over the years; we wrote them down once again to remind ourselves again which brought us to where we were able to see our own flaws over the years and the many accomplishments we've also made.
Thank you James! Keep up the good work and always remind other's of the important factors of running a business. Even if they've been in business for a long time sometimes it's the small things that really count and bring them back down to reality of what they've accomplished over the years or what they can expand with or what a new person is about to enter into!
Have a great day!

James - Great article. Exactly right on. More people need to follow some type of goals/marketing plan but make it within reason. Make goals achievable but where they need to stretch to reach. I just finished doing a mindmapping chart, from there did a marketing plan, from there completed a Google map and now I'm implementing. Thanks.

Cheryl
