The first one is the expectation.
Do not treat this as a hobby. I mean, if you want to treat it as a hobby, fine, fair enough, but do not expect the result of a business.

You need time to learn. I think if someone were to go online for first few months, they would be like spending a lot of money on books, spending a lot of time on forums, reading up and soaking up all the knowledge. That is not time that you actually spend in your business. That is education!

The second key is having the mindset of a business owner.
What I mean is you must invest time and money. Do not expect to work for one hour a day and expect to make it big. Do not expect to get everything for free in terms of services, in terms of products and etc. Understand that business is business and there will be business costs involved. If you are not willing to spend money on your business, do not start a business. This is my very frank advise! The third key would be choosing the correct business model before you start.
I think people are too concerned with the techniques and the tactics of the online businesses and they overlook the more important stuff.

To me, you must choose the business model at the first step. Are you going for eBay business, are you going for building content sites? Are you going to build a direct response website selling products or selling e-books or selling software? or Are you going for networking marketing business model? Once you have decided on it, only then do you start to look at the techniques and tactics of it because different business models will require different methods.
