What if there was a way to have your cake and eat it too?

We have all heard this saying over the years. According to Wikopedia, this saying means “To have one's cake and eat it too or simply have one's cake and eat it (sometimes eat one's cake and have it too) is the instance of an individual consuming, exhausting, taking advantage of or using up a particular thing and, then, after that thing is gone or no longer reasonably available, still attempting to benefit from or use it.” Generally this is a negative staying. But what if I told you there is a way to consume something and benefit from that same something.

I know it’s hard to believe, but what if there were such a program? Wouldn’t you want to take advantage of it?

Let’s look at all the household items you use every month. Things like laundry soap, fabric softener, glass cleaner, and dish soap. I think it is safe to say that the average family spends from $50.00 to $175.00 a month on these items. So, you ask, how do I get these double benefits just from cleaning my house?

It gets even better. You can also get this benefit for losing weight and even having some snacks.

Dr. Robin, you ask, how can this be? When I buy something the only benefits I get is the enjoyment or weight loss or a clean house. When those products are gone they are gone and so is my the money I spent on them. SO what in the world are you talking about?

Ok here is the answer. The Government and the IRS have stated that if you are an associate, distributor or IBO (independent business owner) for a network marketing company, and that company requires you to purchase a certain amount of product to stay qualified (often referred to as autoship) to receive your commissions, the amount of those purchases is a business expense, even if you use these products yourself.

Even though I have had this verified by several attorneys and tax specialists, as always check with your own attorney or tax expert.

Here’s how it works. If company M says you have to get 70 points (BV, CV, etc) to maintain your position in the company and be eligible for commissions. The cost is $85.00 to obtain those 70 points. Then the $85.00 worth of products that Company M required you to purchase is tax deductable as a business expense. This deduction applies even if you use these products yourself in your own home. If you joined Company M, the benefits would be as follows:

1. Business expense of $85.00 (tax write off)

2. You stay qualified for your commission checks

3. You get use dollars you are currently spending to clean your house, lose weight, or just have some great snacks (redirection of funds, that is no increase in spending) to stay active in Company M.

4. You now have another stream of income (commissions from Company M) and you can potentially make enough in commissions to pay for the products!

Certainly it makes sense for anyone in a program like that to use the products. I would hesitate to buy anything from someone who doesn't think enough of the products to actually use them.

Though I am a bit shocked at the amount of money that average households spend on cleaning products. I know we don't even come close to spending that much, but my daughter's a supreme tightwad and very good at finding low priced environmentally sound substitutes. We go through a fair amount of cheap vinegar and baking soda for cleaning. So it really is also a matter of lifestyle.

Choose the program that fits your real living habits, attitudes, personality and lifestyle. That means you're more likely to socialize with others who live in similar ways and could benefit from the bargains you're passing on to the consumer -- and check the prices on the comparable products at the supermarket. If it's not a real bargain compared to supermarket prices, then you will have to either emphasize other aspects of the product like environmental safety or better function, or look for something else to sell that you can honestly stand behind.

Of course if you're selling a weight loss program, being able to demonstrate that you did use the products and lose weight would be a serious clinch to selling them. Keeping "before" pictures, charting your personal progress and having actual results would weigh much more than testimonials from someone the prospect doesn't know.

So that would in itself be another "have your cake and eat it too" since your commitment to your business in selling weight loss products and the need to demonstrate success to make the sales, could be enough motivation to stick to the plan and peel off the pounds.

I tend to think of those situations more as "kill two birds with one stone" but they do abound, there are a lot of good things in life that can be dovetailed that way.

Of course for me it's that art supplies always pay for themselves, especially when I get the very best available but look for them on sale, deep discount or Clearance online. Very often I can get artist grade materials for the price of student supplies and then that raises the real quality of my paintings -- they are more archival and durable, and I can tell my clients they're archival honestly.

One way to have your cake and eat it too is to bake 2 cakes, put your name on one and eat the other... yes? Or, you can mix the dough with the right business intelligence, dress it up for your customers or clients and then serve it with just the right accents. The business you win justifies the question. Yes, you can!

Every time I get a cake, whether it's a gift or I bake it myself.. I always eat it and then reuse the container. LOL

Good article. There are many expenses that you can use as tax breaks.. do check with the person doing your taxes first though to make sure.

Good example. However, few people start with the end in mind. I interact with very few individuals that are looking for the cake that can be eaten as well. Many years ago I wanted to add a new computer to my company. Yet selling my older system would bring little cash to help with the purchase. So, I thought about my options. Of which it seemed that few existed. Then I thought some more. Still no break-through. Time for a coffee break; and some more thinking about that end result of a new system which came bundled with a ton of software that I could use immediately. Then it hit me!

I created a BBS (pre-cursor to internet, after a fashion, with "dial up" modems) and ran it off the old computer. Then, I sold advertising on the BBS. Just enough to pay for the new system. So, I had the new system and new software, plus, I still had the old system if I needed to process any non-compatible data.

After reading this blog I know what that saying means now as I never heard it before. I know most sponsors and upline members will be nice and helpful at first to get you to join and after you join and fall in love with the program they are no longer their to help and I hate that and can be one of the reason for peoples failure!

There are certainly many benefits to owning a home based business, tax write offs being one of them. When I first read the title to this I wasn't sure which "cake" you'd be discussing..business, personal relationships, career...etc. I think the one common theme in all these different flavors of cakes to keep in mind is that if you make your focus on serving others delicious pieces of your "cake" of choice first, you'll naturally have all the cake you want to eat too! If you make your focus only for you to eat your cake...more than likely you'll never be satisfied and always wanting for more cake!
