Why SEM for Antiques is different

As an antique textile dealer, I love nothing better than playing in bag of lace, or researching the provenance of an antique quilt. But as an online textile dealer, you have to stretch yourself to learn more than just fabrics. And this applies to any small business retailer. You need to know your product, that's a given. When you have a business, you need to know about business or hire someone who does...accounting, marketing, legal situations, insurance, etc. When you have an… Continue

“Today’s Generation Vintage Style”

Seventeen Magazine Winter/Spring 2008 Prom edition pictures vintage fashions and accessories for today’s Prom going teen. From flirty vintage dresses, to accessories, like purses, gloves, and jewelry. Today’s generation is bringing a new appreciation, and with it, a new life to vintage fashion and accessories. Material Pleasures Antique Textiles loaned several pieces to Seventeen Magazine for its photo shoot. Among them, a Margaret Smith of Gardine… Continue

Textile Care

Please note, these are only suggestions. If you have a valueable piece, or sentimental piece, I recommend you take it to a professional who cleans antique textiles. Contact me for recommendations. I cannot be held responsible to any damage that might occur or if you are unsuccessful in removing a stain. Before cleaning a vintage textile, many factors must be considered: fabric type, weight, age and condition. Some vintage linens are delicate with fine lace and handwork, while others are strong.… Continue

Quilt Care

Stop!! If you have a quilt that needs to be cleaned, please consider using a professional. Some of the methods described here, if not done properly can ruin your quilt! I will be happy to refer you to someone who can clean, restore, and/or conserve your quilt professionally. That being said: Cleaning: Have a new quilt that you wish to clean? If it is machine pieced, and quilted, and is meant to be used, you can extend the life of your quilt with proper care and washing. You can wash it in the… Continue

I want to thank those of you who gave me such a warm welcome!

My name is Dana Balsamo, I am new at sta.rtup.biz and want tell you a little bit about myself and exactly what I bring to the table.

I started Material Pleasures online as an eBay endeavor. Material Pleasures is now much more:
- an independent e-commerce website
- vendor to NJ and PA antique and quilt shows
- provide quilt appraisals for contemporary and antique quilts
- quilt conservation and restoration services
- assist museums and historical societies with textile collections
- provide textile documents to fashion and home industries for inspirational or actual use

I am a stay at home mom, quilter, quilt historian, appraiser, conservator, collector, and dealer. I love working with all textiles and have used my extensive collection to build an at home business.

I have taken classes with many nationally recognized quilt historians and am AQS trained quilt appraiser. I hope to earn my certification within the next few years as a quilt appraiser.

Because of my extensive collection of 19th and 20th century textiles, it is easy for me to accommodate those industries looking to incorporate the 'vintage look' into their projects. My pieces have been used for inspiration purposes by several very big names design companies. Actual pieces have also been used for fashion and decor, as well as for books, photographical shoots, and as theatrical props.
